Apple iPhone 5 Release Date: Analyst Says Outlook For Q3 Holds Clues To Next iPhone Launch; Will It Be In June Or October?

Munster said that Apple sold 37 million iPhone units in the holiday season of 2011, which proves the handset's growing global footprint. But he “thinks the next major catalyst for the company will be the launch of a sixth-generation iPhone later this year, though he also expects Apple to announce a full-fledged television set late in the December quarter, with sales starting in 2013,” according to Apple Insider.

Assuming an historical average for a decline of 2 percent in revenue in fiscal Q3, and a drop of 9 percent in EPS, Munster is modeling $37.1 billion for Q3 and $9.86 per share, said a report in Barron's.

Munster even said that the outlook for the June Q3 should make clear the prospects for an iPhone 5 introduction as well. he thinks that the release time frame for the next-gen iPhone is of little concern, since the demand is “captive”.

“The most important point is iPhone 5 is coming, and the Street's 8% y/y unit growth estimate for the December-12 quarter is likely too low. while our model currently assumes iPhone 5 in August, it is more likely the phone launches either late in the June quarter or early in the December quarter based on past launches,” Munster wrote.

“Apple's guidance will offer a hint as to the timing of the iPhone 5. The reality is the 'when' question doesn't matter for shares of AAPL as we believe consumer demand for the iPhone is captive and buyers are unlikely to go out to buy a different phone if launch is not until October.”

When To Expect The New iPhone?

Various earlier reports said that the iPhone 5 would be unveiled at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, bringing an end to an eight-month-long life span of the current iPhone 4S.

A recent report in Japanese Apple-watcher website Macotakara also suggested something similar. The report said a Foxconn recruiter revealed during a conversation on TV Tokyo's “World Business Satellite” (WBS) show that the company was hiring about 18,000 people to manufacture the iPhone 5 which would be sold in June.

But within a week, another Foxconn employee showed up and said that the next iPhone would be unveiled in October. When South Korea's Maeil Business Newspaper asked the employee at Foxconn's Taiyuan factory about the iPhone 5 release date, he replied saying, “We just got the order. it [the release] will be around October.”

The report in Maeil Business Newspaper also stated that the order for the next iPhone “has led Foxconn to begin a massive recruitment drive to ensure that enough hands are on deck in order to meet Apple's release schedule” in October.

Although there is no official word on when the upcoming iteration of the Apple iPhone is finally arriving, chances of a fall launch look stronger than that of a summer launch.

Impressive iPhone 4S Sales

Apple would be inclined to pull the trigger on a June iPhone 5 release, had there been a decrease in the iPhone 4S sales, but there's hardly any sign of that so far. in its fiscal first quarter ending Dec. 31, 2011, Apple reported iPhone sales of 37 million, an increase of 128% year-over-year, and the 4S was only released in some markets as recently as January.

According to a Gartner report, Apple had an excellent fourth quarter, selling 35.5 million smartphones to end users, a 121.4 percent increase year on year. The market research firm even predicted that the company's performance in the smartphone sector would continue through the first quarter of 2012 as availability of the iPhone 4S widened.

iOS 6 and WWDC 2012

iMore's Rene Ritchie, who claims to have “valuable sources from within Apple” under his reach, predicted an October 2012 release for the next-gen iPhone in March.

Ritchie is known for his solid track record with Apple-related news. in August, 2011, he correctly predicted that Apple was going to release its then next iPhone in the first week of October and that the phone would be called “iPhone 4S,” not “iPhone 5.” in addition, Ritchie also foretold the new iPad's March 7 unveiling.

Regarding a new version iOS, accompanying the iPhone 5, Ritchie said that every new iPhone launch has seen the release of a new OS version next to it. while there has not been any exact information on how large an update Apple might be planning for iOS 6, “9 months doesn't sound like a lot of time for even a modest release.”

The last version, iOS 5, was a major update with key features like iCloud and Siri, “and Apple made good use of those 16 months to bring it to market.”

“If Apple announces an iOS 6 SDK event this spring, like they did from 2008 to 2010, then we may start getting an idea,” Ritchie said. “If iOS 6 isn't introduced to developers until WWDC, presumably in the summer like 2011, then a fall release would seem a certainty.”

In addition, unlike a summer release, the fall release of the next iPhone would ensure that the owners of the current iPhone 4S have completed at least a year into their carrier contracts, according to iDownload Blog. it will “allow most of them to purchase a new iPhone at the subsidized price.” Releasing the new iPhone before the holidays would also help Apple record good sales.

The Rumored Features of iPhone 5

As Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets said, the next-gen iPhone could sport a 4-inch display, contrary to earlier reports of a large 4.6-inch and 3.5-inch screen. some other sources also said that the device would sport Quantum Dot LED curved glass edge-to-edge display with 1280 x 720 resolutions (367ppi).

9to5mac reported Monday that Apple had internally seeded a prototype next-generation iPhone with the iPhone 4 design. The actual next-generation iPhone is specifically said to not include the iPhone 4/4S design, but Apple is testing these new devices in older casings to throw off leaks,” said the report.

According to the report, the iPhone prototypes had “a variation of the A5X's S5L8945X architecture” and like the new iPad, they were also “packing 1GB of RAM.”

Jeff Benjamin of iDownloadBlog thinks that the variant in question is “probably not an 'A5X' per-se, but an entirely new processor dedicated to the device's smaller form factor, and less visually intensive needs.

Earlier reports suggested that the sixth generation iPhone would feature an A6 processor. it was expected to be a superfast 1.2 to 1.5 GHz processor with 1GB or more of RAM to offer amazing processing capabilities to the smartphone.

As far as the other likely features are concerned, the upcoming iPhone model includes an 8 megapixel (or even higher) camera with the ability to take pictures in the panorama mode, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera for video chatting, iOS 6, 4G LTE technology, near Field Communication (NFC) technology, improved Siri and a much-improved battery life.

Some Superb Accessories For The iPhone 4S – Part One

Since its release in October 2011 a huge number of iPhone 4S handsets have been sold with over 4 million units shipping in the very first weekend. with so many of these devices in circulation there are dozens of manufacturers developing accessories for this excellent mobile phone. We take a look at two of very best additional extras that are available for this excellent device.

The iPhone 4S comes with a very basic mains charger but many users decide to purchase a docking station to perform this task. in addition to charging the phone a docking station incorporates speakers so that users can enjoy audio content from their phone in a higher quality than can be achieved from the speakers built in to the handset. The iDapt S1 is a superb docking solution that offers some excellent functions not present on many similar devices. The docking station is capable of charging up to four different devices at the same time. this will appeal to fans of Apple products as it means that the iPhone 4S can be charging at the same time as their iPad. rather than using a series of wires to perform these tasks the base station is supplied with a set of interchangeable tips designed to fit almost every mobile device. this keeps the unit looking very neat and makes it perfect for a bedside table or an office desk. an FM radio and clock are both fitted in the unit which also makes it perfect for use as an alarm clock or for listening to radio broadcasts.

Some of the very best ideas are the simplest and the Smartphones Experts S&C Retractable Cable is a perfect example of this. this is a basic charging cable for the iPhone 4S but one where you can adjust the length thanks to a clever winding mechanism positioned in the middle of the cable. The idea behind this design is to help users to reduce clutter in their home by allowing them to use the exact cable length that they require. at its shortest length this new design measures just 4.5 inches in length and it can be extended to over 24 inches in length. this will appeal to iPhone users who become frustrated at the short length of the cable that comes supplied with the phone. this innovation is easy to carry around and makes charging your device or connecting to a computer a much neater affair.

There are a wealth of excellent accessories available for the iPhone 4S and the two we have looked at are just two examples. The iDapt provides a superb docking station with potential for charging multiple units while the retractable cable is incredibly simple yet effective.

The iPhone 4 offers more with iOS 5 upgrade as its operating system alongside its single core 1 gigahertz A4 processor respectively. The handset also has a 5 megapixel camera for 720 pixel High Definition video recording and is great for snapping quick shots on the touch control interface.

The handset offers a newer design and a range of new features on its predecessor, which have since been upgraded again with the launch of iOS 5 coinciding with the release of the iPhone 4S. The large 3.5 inch display is subsequently sharper and richer including clearer text and better image rendering. The new operating system meanwhile, now offers faster and easier ways to interact and use the phone through its touch user interface, such as introducing the Notifications Center. This simple built-in feature places all of the push notifications into one list allowing you to see them, dismiss them and choose which apps you want to notify you, and what about. Push notifications also now appear at the top of the display and one swipe with your finger can take you straight to that application.

The handset also features either 8 or 16 gigabytes of internal storage memory along with the introduction of the iCloud offering a further 5 gigabytes of free storage which can hold your music, photos, documents and more wherever you go. iPhone 4S helps iOS close the gap on Android

The iPhone 4S helped bump up Apple's fourth-quarter market share.

Apple’siPhone 4S proved to be the catalyst that jump-startediPhone sales last quarter, a new study from Nielsen has found.

Among Americans who bought a new smartphone in the last three months, 44.5 percent of those surveyed in December purchased an iPhone, putting Apple’s handset just behindAndroid smartphones, which were picked up by 46.9 percent of December respondents, according to Nielsen. RIM’s BlackBerry came in at 4.5 percent.

That finding stands in stark contrast to results from Nielsen’s October survey of consumers who bought a new smartphone in the previous three months. that time around, 61.6 percent of consumers said they chose an Android-based handset, and just 25.1 percent said they bought an iPhone. BlackBerry came in third place at 7.7 percent.

Not surprisingly, Apple’s iPhone 4S, which launched in October, was the reason the company’s smartphone performed so much better later in the year. in fact, Nielsen found that 57 percent of new iPhone owners surveyed in December bought the iPhone 4S. The research firm didn’t say how many bought the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4.

Apple’s iPhone 4S was a hit nearly instantly. The company announced back in October that in the first weekend of availability, it sold 4 million units, doubling iPhone 4 sales during its first weekend. part of the iPhone 4S’ appeal was pent-up demand, as consumers waited over a year to get their hands on the device.

But even as more consumers flocked to the iPhone, Apple could do little to stop Android from dominating the smartphone arena last quarter. according to Nielsen, Android OS captured 46.3 percent share of the smartphone market during the three-month period, easily outpacing Apple’s iOS 30 percent share. RIM’s OS came in third place with 14.9 percent, followed by Windows Mobile at 4.6 percent share.

A look at how consumers purchased smartphones over the last three months.

Over the entire three-month period–not monthly, as previously shown–it was a similar story. during the fourth quarter, 51.7 percent of people who bought devices went with an Android handset. Apple’s iPhone accounted 37 percent. RIM’s BlackBerry came in at 6 percent.

Looking beyond iPhones and Android, Nielsen found that 46 percent of all U.S.-based mobile consumers last quarter owned a smartphone, and the company expects that figure to grow “quickly.” It’s hard to argue with that logic: 60 percent of all mobile consumers last quarter chose a smartphone over a feature phone.

Are Verizon and Sprint next in line for the Galaxy Note?

The Samsung Galaxy Note may come to Verizon and Sprint as the Galaxy Journal.

(Credit:CBS Interactive)

New rumors have surfaced which suggest that Verizon Wireless and Sprint will offer their own versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Announced for AT&T at last week’sCES, the handset features a massive 5.3-inch HD AMOLED screen, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 2,500mAh battery. Oh, and then there’s that stylus thing that’s getting a bunch of attention too.

As it turns out, though, AT&T may not be the only carrier to offer the phone/tablet hybrid. according to analyst Paul Mueller, both Verizon and Sprint are expected to carry the device, possibly under the name of Galaxy Journal.

Should the rumor pan out, I expect AT&T to get a few months of exclusivity out of the handset before it moves on to other wireless providers as well. Samsung employed a similar tactic with the Galaxy Nexus, giving Verizon a head start on Sprint, for example.

With Mobile World Congress arriving in but a few weeks, I would not anticipate any announcements out of Sprint or Verizon given the show’s GSM focus. looking ahead a bit further, however, it would not surprise me to see either carrier unveil the phone atCTIA in may.

The iPhone 5 And The Galaxy S3 – A Look At Rumoured Design And Camera Features On These New Models

Two highly anticipated new mobile phones are due to be launched this year in the form of the new iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. Although there is only rumoured specification available at the moment we can still get a fairly good idea of what these models will offer. Previously we took a look at what to expect in terms of screen technology and processing power so here we examine how the models may look and also what multi media features will be incorporated.

The most difficult area to assess with these two new models is how they will actually look. The design of the handset is usually the last detail to be revealed about a new model but we can look at rumours and also the brands history to get a good idea of what to expect. The Samsung Galaxy S and S2 have both been incredibly slim devices so Samsung will look to make the new S3 the slimmest phone available when it is released. Unfortunately this thin profile has often been accompanied by a body that has been mainly constructed of lightweight plastics. Expect more of the same from the new S3, the recently released Galaxy Nexus used similar materials and Samsung are working on developing more durable plastics so there is a strong likelihood that this material will be used on this new model. The design of the Apple iPhone 5 is a bit harder to predict as Apple have changed their design quite drastically over the years. The iPhone 4 and 4S both used a glass design but it is rumoured that the new device will combine a mix of glass and metallic materials. we can be sure that the model will be the slimmest iPhone ever produced and there is even talk of Apple using a curved display on this model.

Multi media facilities on modern phones have improved dramatically over recent years with most devices now offering a high quality digital camera along with video capture features. The iPhone 5 looks likely to incorporate the same 8 mega pixel camera that was used in the 4S. this is no bad thing as the 4S is regarded as one of the leading camera phones available thanks to a combination of the high resolution and the excellent optics that Apple use in the device. There is likely to be an improvement in resolution on the phones secondary camera however so that users can enjoy Facetime video calls in HD quality. There is also likely to be a software update that will enable the phone to offer more camera features. It is rumoured that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will include a 12 mega pixel camera that will make it the highest resolution device available along with the new Sony Xperia S. The secondary camera on the model is set to offer 2 mega pixel photography along with 720P video capture resolution.

Both of these new phones are set to boast eye catching looks with a very slim design. Camera facilities are set to be very impressive on both models with great secondary cameras and HD video capture. Despite offering a lower photography resolution the optics used on the iPhone 5 are likely to ensure that there is little to choose between these two devices in terms of quality.

We Look At The My Secret Folder Application For The iPhone 4S

The new iPhone 4S incorporates a clever pass code that means that after a period of inactivity the phone will lock itself until the correct pin number is entered. Many users of the phone however opt not to use this feature as it does increase the operation time when you want to perform a quick function. we take a look at the new My Secret Folder application, a clever piece of software designed to keep personal files safe even if your phone is not locked.

The principle idea behind this new application is to keep private photo and video files away from prying eyes. this can prove especially useful if you have your handset stolen or if you leave your phone unguarded around inquisitive friends. when you download this application any photographs or videos that you capture from the software are automatically stored behind a 4 digit password. Users have the option to also move existing material from their camera roll into the application but it is important to remember to delete the original media as this is not encrypted. The whole ideas sounds like a fairly basic data security system but the application includes some wonderful features to help keep your data even more secure. The first of these clever ideas is that the icon for the application is fairly well camouflaged so it is not obvious to anybody who happens to be looking at your home screen. The icon takes the form of a shortcut folder complete with smaller icons displayed inside it. when you look very closely this may look very obvious but when the symbol is mixed in with a variety of other icons it becomes very well hidden and inconspicuous.

The word cunning is not one that you would normally associate with applications for the iPhone 4S but My Secret Folder deserves this title. The software includes not one but two four digit passwords. The first one you enter is a decoy in case anybody happens to be watching what you type on screen. when this is entered a number of normal photographs are displayed but none that are locked within the software. These photographs can only be viewed when you enter the second password. perhaps the most ingenious element of this software is how it reacts when the wrong password is typed on the phone. when this occurs the phone takes a photograph using the front facing camera which is stored in a log along with the geographical location of where it happened and the code that they attempted to input. this can be viewed by the user so they can see who was tampering with their phone and what numbers they tried to use. this is potentially useful when choosing future passwords and PIN numbers as it gives you an indication what other people expect the digits to be.

The My Secret Folder application for the iPhone 4S is much more than a basic secure folder. The app incorporates a number of features that should make it an essential download for anybody who wants to keep their photographs and video footage private.
