Bills, Mario Williams agree to deal

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — New England quarterback Tom Brady might want to watch his back. The Jets’ Mark Sanchez, too.

After spending the past six seasons harassing quarterbacks for the Houston Texans, defensive end Mario Williams — one of the NFL’s top pass-rushers — has found new motivation in a whopping contract and a new home in the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills.

“I’m ecstatic, very excited. I can’t wait for the opportunity,” Williams said Thursday after signing a six-year deal potentially worth $100 million. “There’s no pressure. I’ve played against great quarterbacks. and I’m looking forward to playing against these quarterbacks, chasing them down and making things happen.”

Williams’ deal, which includes $50 million in guaranteed money, is the richest ever given to an NFL defensive player. it came after two days of talks, which started when the Bills flew the former top draft pick to Buffalo on a private jet Tuesday, shortly after the NFL’s free-agency period opened.

Terms of Williams’ contract were provided by the player’s agent, Ben Dogra.

“We got a lot better,” Buffalo general manager Buddy Nix said, noting the Bills addressed their highest offseason priority by bolstering what had been an anemic pass rush. “Good things come to the people that wait. so you guys have been waiting, and we’ve got a good thing here.”

Though the contract was agreed to shortly after noon, the news conference to introduce Williams was delayed by more than two hours as the two sides worked out the final details.

The wait was even longer for Nix, who noted the Bills’ pro scouts identified Williams as their key target since January.

“The no. 1 guy for us from Day 1 was this guy,” Nix said. “Obviously, you don’t do anything until he hits free agency, but it’s been a long process. and it’s been fun, especially since it turned out right.”

After quarterback Peyton Manning, Williams has been regarded as one of the top free agents available this offseason.

I’ve played against great quarterbacks. and I’m looking forward to playing against these quarterbacks, chasing them down and making things happen.

”– New Bills DE Mario Williams

Williams’ addition immediately improves a defense that had difficulty applying pressure since Aaron Schobel was released before the 2010 season. Buffalo managed just 27 sacks in 2010, and 29 sacks last season, 10 coming in one game.

Listed at 6 feet 6, 285 pounds, Williams is a two-time Pro Bowl starter and had a franchise-best 53 sacks in six seasons with the Texans. Williams was limited to playing just five games last season as a result of a torn chest muscle. He also missed three games in 2010 after having surgery to repair a sports hernia.

Williams said he’s healthy, and is accustomed to the playing in the spotlight.

The Texans initially were questioned for overlooking running back Reggie Bush by drafting Williams with the no. 1 pick in 2006.

“The only pressure and motivation I have is to come in here and do what I need to do with my teammates and for us to succeed,” Williams said.

Coach Chan Gailey is looking forward to seeing Williams help a line that features two solid tackles in Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus.

Kyle Williams is expected to be fully healthy after having surgery to repair a nagging foot injury. Dareus, the third player picked in last year’s draft, is coming off a promising rookie season in which he led the Bills with 5½ sacks.

“I can’t put a percentage on how much better we are, but I know we’re appreciatively better,” Gailey said. “A better pass rush makes a better secondary. A better defense makes a better offense. it all works together.”

Big Bucks for Newest Bill

The $50 million of guaranteed money in Mario Williams’ new deal with the Bills is the most in a contract for a defensive player in NFL history. Lions receiver Calvin Johnson received the richest guarantee with the contract extension he signed one day earlier.

Mario Williams was intrigued by Buffalo, and did his homework after getting the sense the Bills might pursue him in free agency.

In the past few weeks, he spoke to players familiar with the city, and his Texans position coach, bill Kollar, who spent two seasons with the Bills.

Then he got a chance to learn more about the city over the past two days touring the region, along with his fiance, Erin Marzouki, who arrived in Buffalo on Wednesday. what Williams discovered is that Buffalo reminded him of his small-town home of Richlands, N.C.

“It was just like going back,” he said. “I couldn’t say no, it’s a family atmosphere here.”

He immediately noted Bills fans’ passion for football, and how many came up with colorful ways to urge Williams to sign with Buffalo. The best example was seeing pictures of a local pizza place using pepperoni to spell out “Come Mario 90″ on its pies, the 90 referring to Williams’ number in Houston.

The avid outdoorsman, Williams also found a hunting partner in the get-acquainted process, Bills’ Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.

Kelly played a role in the recruiting by inviting Williams and Marzouki over to his house in suburban Buffalo. it was during the visit that Williams happened to spot nine deer in Kelly’s backyard.

More important, Williams believes he can make a difference on a team that got off to a 5-2 start last year before unraveling by losing eight of its last 10.

“You saw from the very beginning of last year what is capable here,” Williams said. “We’re just adding more pieces.”

And Williams is a big one.

LaDainian Tomlinson: Jets Locker Room Problems as Bad as He’s Been Around

On Sunday LaDainian Tomlinson pinned the Jets’ locker room problems on a rift between Mark Sanchez and the wide receivers. He took his statements even further during an interview on Inside the NFL.

“And I’ve been around some locker rooms and quarterback-receiver situations and what-not,” Tomlinson said. “But it was as bad as I’ve been around. You know it was at the point where I think the players could no longer do anything about it. There was nothing that the players could do. So when it gets to that point there are certain changes that need to happen.”

Tomlinson says the Santonio Holmes-Mark Sanchez feud was really bad.

“It got out-of-hand toward the end of the season,” he said. “That is why it got out in the media. this is something that happened (in the) third or fourth week of the season, that was going on, and nobody knew about it because the players kept it under wraps. Until we went on that losing streak and guys started to speak up and speak out about certain things.”

As if that’s not bad enough, LT blames the Jets organization for what happened.

“They (the organization) created this,” Tomlinson said. “This is the type of football team that they wanted. Mike Tannenbaum (and) Rex Ryan are both brash, in-your-face type of style, say whatever you want, just get it done on the field. And then it leads to other things (like) guys are calling each other out and saying I’m not getting the ball or whatever it may be.”

Tomlinson also wasn’t fond of Rex Ryan’s bold predictions.

“I would prefer him not to say it as much as he did,” Tomlinson said. “I don’t mind every now and again saying we are going to win a championship. Maybe at the beginning of the year just saying, ‘Hey, our goal is to win a championship.’ But at the same time every week if you are calling out a team on certain things, I think it puts a little extra on your team. Guys really want to go out there and say, ‘Let’s shut this guy up. Let’s shut these Jets up, just end their season.’ I think that adds to that when Rex speaks up like that because, you know, everybody doesn’t like that type of style, and they’re not supposed to. But at the same time there are certain things that you can do to not have it come off like that.”

What’s funny is how pleased Tomlinson seemed to be in 2010, his first year with the team. Back then he loved Rex Ryan’s approach and loved his new organization. Here’s what he said in October, 2010:

“People get on us for talking about winning the championship and things that we want to do here,” Tomlinson said. “But for me, if we’re going to talk about it — and I see the type of talent we have here — I want the guys to know what a guy like Vince Lombardi said about what it takes to be No. 1.”

He didn’t seem to mind talking about winning it all back then. So the issue remains: is it bad characters that led to the locker room problems, or is it losing? It’s always been said that winning cures all issues, and it’s hard to disagree with that.

Kate Upton Linked To Mark Sanchez?!? This Deserves Some Hot Pictures (Gallery)

December 21, 2011, 11:15 am

Mark Sanchez is be carrying 13 interceptions and 8 wins into Week 16. In Mark’s 3 years in the NFL, this is by far his most disappointing season and Jets’ fans have been calling for blood for months. Fuck all that though, because I think we just found out what has mark distracted: Kate Upton. good enough. nobody knows anything for sure. Apparently she doesn’t even follow him on Twitter, a deal breaker if ever there was one. but if mark Sanchez is really taking that to the bedroom every night, possibly all season, we’re willing to give him a pass this year. Nice to know Kate is into class too. I’m looking at you Gisele.

Jets’ Mark Sanchez will start vs. Giants despite apparent neck injury

John O’Boyle / The Star-LedgerJets QB Mark Sanchez needed his neck stretched out on the sidelines after taking a hit from Jason Babin in Sunday’s loss.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said quarterback Mark Sanchez received treatment today and will start against the Giants on Saturday, despite suffering an apparent neck injury in the 45-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“He took some good shots in the game, but he never missed any snaps and he’ll be starting on Saturday,” Ryan said in his weekly spot on The Michael Kay show on ESPN 1050 Radio. “So I feel good about that.”

Sanchez, in attendance at a charity event for teammate Bart Scott’s foundation tonight, said he feels fine and did not need any follow-up tests after the game. he expects to take all his usual reps in practice this week and said he was headed back to the facility tonight to continue film study for the Giants game on a short week.

“Feeling good, feel good,” Sanchez said. “Practice all week, get treatment as the week goes, but I feel good.”

Sanchez was hit across the face by Eagles defensive end Jason Babin on a failed third-down play in the third quarter. he required help from center Nick Mangold to walk off the field, bent over in apparent pain with his right arm hanging. Sanchez seemed unable to lift his head for a few minutes as he sat on the bench, at one point covering his head with a towel.

Trainers shook out his arm and worked on his neck on the sideline, and he was able to return for the next series without missing a play. Sanchez was only taken out of the game for the last series in the fourth quarter, though Ryan did say he mulled pulling his quarterback earlier.

“I considered it, but I thought that Mark needed to go back out there; he wanted to go out back out there and be with his guys and lead the guys down the field,” Ryan said. “But after we scored, I thought that was the right time to get him out of the game.”

Back-up Mark Brunell came in after Plaxico Burress caught a 9-yard touchdown, but not without Sanchez pleading to finish the game.

“He was definitely not wanting to come out of the game,” Ryan said. “But at that stage of the game, I was like, ‘Hey look, we went down and scored,’ so it was great. Leave that message with the team. I understand him wanting to finish the game, but by then you’re thinking about next week, and the best thing for our team was to put Brunell in the game to finish it.”

RB/KR Joe McKnight separated his right shoulder against the Eagles, and Ryan is “not real sure” if he will play against the Giants. Ryan said it is a wait-and-see situation, depending on how fast McKnight heals, though it doesn’t help that the Jets are on a short week. McKnight hyperextended the elbow in that same arm against the Redskins and sat out the following game, before returning with a custom brace.
