Finale Preview: Hugh Laurie and the House Cast Check Out

After eight seasons and 177 episodes, House ends with an outbreak of poignant goodbyes. In the emotional run-up to the series finale — the episode, titled “Everybody Dies,” airs may 21 at 9pm on Fox — each shooting day brought cheers, standing Os and misty-eyed send-offs. “A succession of daily memorial services, it was,” as Hugh Laurie puts it. “Someone would yell, ‘Hey, everybody, this is Omar Epps‘ last scene!’ ‘This is Jesse Spencer‘s last scene!’ ‘This is B camera operator’s last scene.’ The art director’s. The sound technician’s. it became hard to process all the finality.”

Hugh Laurie – Gifted Actor and Piano Player

The next time you're watching TV and Gregory House sits down by the piano at the end of an episode, watch his fingers carefully. The British actor that plays Dr. House, Hugh Laurie, is both an accomplished actor and a professional musician.

If you ask Hugh Laurie about his musical skills, he'll likely give you a humble and self-effacing answer. For instance, Laurie often describes himself as a "frustrated musician" and says that he "trifles" with the piano and guitar.

Since the early days of his acting career on British programs like A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Poor White Trash...

It’s amusing to imagine…

Latest iPhone Rumor Points to 4-Inch Screen (Again)

For those wondering if Apple plans to give its next iPhone a larger screen, a report from the Wall Street Journal just added more fuel to the fire.

The newspaper reported that Apple has ordered screens from its Asian suppliers that are “at least” a half-inch bigger than the current 3.5-inch screens used on every other model of the iPhone thus far. Production for the new 4-inch screens is set to begin next month.

Reuters, meanwhile, claims to have sources who confirmed the Journal’s report, noting early production of the new screen has begun at three different suppliers in South Korea and Japan — Korea’s LG Display, Sharp Corp, and Japan Display Inc. Reuters’ sources estimated the suppliers will receive production orders next month and start the assembly line in August.

Apple’s decision to give its next iPhone a larger screen could be a way to compete with rival smartphone maker Samsung, which has been upping the ante on screen size. South Korea-based Samsung, which became the world’s top cell phone maker in the first quarter, unveiled its Galaxy S III smartphone earlier this month with a 4.8-inch screen.

Rumors that Apple is planning to deviate from its existing 3.5-inch iPhone screen size have been circulating since early this year. back in January, 9to5Mac claimed to have “reliable sources” at Apple supplier Foxconn who said several possible models of the next iPhone were floating around, all of which included screens of at least 4 inches.

Reuters in March reported that Apple’s new iPhone will have a massive 4.6-inch Retina display. at the time, MacRumors called the report “questionable” and “hard to believe,” but speculated that a 4-inch screen was possible.

Last month, meanwhile, analyst Brian White with Topeka Capital Markets predicted the next iPhone will have a 4-inch screen and high-speed 4G LTE connectivity. White said he gleaned insider information about Apple’s next-gen iPhone during a recent tour in China and Taiwan, where he visited various tech suppliers.

Other rumors indicate that the next iPhone will be about 20 percent thinner than its predecessor, with a metal backside, and smaller dock connector.

Pacers put hurt on Heat

No Big Three meant one big problem for Miami, and one very big win for Indiana.

David West scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, George Hill added 15 and the Pacers took home-court advantage by beating the Heat 78-75 in Game 2 of the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal series last night in Miami

Game 3 is tomorrow night in Indianapolis.

LeBron James scored 28 points for Miami and Dwyane Wade finished with 24, but both missed big chances for the Heat late. James missed two free throws with 54.3 seconds left and Miami down one, and Wade was short on a layup that would have tied the game with 16 seconds left.

AP INSIDE MOVE: LeBron James tries to stop Indiana’s David West during the Heat’s 78-75 loss last night.

Mario Chalmers’ 3-pointer to tie bounced away on the final play, and the series was tied 1-1. Danny Granger scored 11 points for Indiana, which took advantage of Heat forward Chris Bosh’s absence and outrebounded Miami 50-40.

Bosh is expected to miss the rest of the series with a strained abdominal muscle. without him, James and Wade combined for 52 points — and no other Miami player scored more than five.

Spurs 1108, Clippers 92

In San Antonio, Tim Duncan had 26 points and 10 rebounds as the well-rested Spurs wore down the Clippers in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinals series.

Manu Ginobili added 22 points for the Spurs, who have won 15 in a row. Game 2 is tomorrow night.

A dreadful third quarter by Miami — 3 for 17 shooting — allowed Indiana to lead by as much as 11, before the emotions picked up considerably in the fourth.

Wade was steaming when he missed a shot after trying to create contact with Indiana’s Dahntay Jones with 9:53 left. as Wade argued, Jones went the other way and set Leandro Barbosa up for a score that put the Pacers up 63-56.

Chalmers turned the ball over on the next possession, and as the Pacers took off for what set up as a 2-on-none break, Wade caught Darren Collison from behind and knocked him over. a flagrant-1 was called, Collison hit both free throws, the Indiana lead was nine and tensions were suddenly high.

It all seemed to spark Miami.

The Heat scored the next six points, James — who got hit in the head by Granger with 7:25 left, sparking a bit of shoving that led to double-technicals given to both players — added a putback off an offensive rebound and Wade did the same about a minute later, getting Miami within 69-66 with 5:57 left.

James missed a free throw that would have tied it with 4:30 remaining, but after George got the rebound, James dove in to create a jump ball situation. The MVP easily won the tap, sending it to Wade, whose bank shot over West put Miami back on top 72-71.

Barbosa scored on the next Indiana possession. The Pacers weren’t rattled, and left celebrating minutes later.

Indiana scored 16 points in the first seven minutes of the first half, then scored 17 in the next 17 minutes. And even after a drought like that, Miami’s lead was only 38-33 at the break.

George missed four shots in a 60-second span early on, setting the tone for an icy-cold half by the Pacers. Indiana was up 16-9 midway through the first when the Heat went to a smaller lineup that paid quick dividends.

Three baskets at the rim — a layup by Wade, then James firing a pass to Turiaf for a dunk, followed by a Wade touch pass to James for another slam — erased most of the early deficit, and defense did the rest. Indiana missed 24 of 29 shots in one stretch, and after Hibbert used his size advantage to get three shots in the first 1:11, he only got two attempts over the rest of the half.

Miami was 0-for-7 on shots that would have pushed its margin to double digits in the first half, continuing a trend from Game 1. neither team ever led the series opener by more than nine either, and when George made a 3-pointer with 6:09 left in the third, the Pacers had pulled into a 46-all tie. a steal and dunk by George followed on the next possession, putting the Pacers back on top.

Before long, the Pacers had that first 10-point edge of the series. Collison’s jumper with 1:29 left in the third put Indiana up 59-49, and the margin was 61-52 entering the fourth.

For as bad as Indiana’s first half was offensively, Miami’s third quarter was equally dreadful — the Heat were outscored 28-14 on 3-for-17 shooting in the period, the third-worst shooting effort by the reigning East champs in any quarter this season.

This one’s for the girls: Believe You Can wins Kentucky Oaks with jockey Rosie Napravnik

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rosie Napravnik insists she’s just another jockey. She’s one with champion’s credentials now.

Napravnik became the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Oaks, keeping believe You Can near the front from the start before pulling away from Broadway’s Alibi in the $1 million race for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs on Friday.

“I wouldn’t say there was pressure because the expectations were nobody had ever done it before,” the 24-year-old rider said after her first Grade 1 stakes victory. “It’s great for all the women in the industry, in the world. I’m just happy.”

In the fillies’ counterpart to the Kentucky Derby, Napravnik finally broke through after finishing second last year behind Plum Pretty aboard St. John’s River.

In this one, she took the filly named for the pep talks former Kentucky Gov. Brereton C. Jones’ father gave him to the front in the 1 1/8-mile race with an impressive stretch run.

“My father had told me from the very beginning when he made a little plaque to hang in my bedroom with the word ‘can’t’ on it. C-A-N-apostrophe-T with a big X across it,” the former governor said. “Believe you can and you can.”

The victory also gave trainer Larry Jones his second Oaks victory after winning in 2008 with Proud Spell. That celebration was cut short when his star filly, eight Belles, broke down after a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby the following day. she was euthanized on the track and Jones later retired briefly following health problems.

“I’m not going to bring up a lot of things in the past,” Jones said. “We celebrated for 24 hours. At that point, we kind of forgot we had won the Oaks. We’re going to enjoy this one.”

Napravnik lost her Kentucky Derby mount this week when the Joneses decided not to run colt Mark Valeski, but this was a good consolation prize in a race delayed 35 minutes because of a strong thunderstorm earlier in the day.

“It’s unbelievable. I can’t even tell you what I’m feeling right now,” Napravnik said. “This is what it feels like when your dreams come true.”

Believe You Can followed a similar path that Proud Spell did by winning the fair Ground Oaks in her final prep race.

“This filly gave us that ‘wow’ factor,” the trainer said. “You need that wow when you’re coming in here because you’re dealing with tough horses.”

Phillip) Rosie Napravnik rides believe You Can to victory in the 138th running of the Kentucky Oaks horse race at Churchill Downs Friday, May 4, 2012, in Louisville, Ky. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip)

Believe You Can certainly had it, and Napravnik did, too.

While she won’t ride in Saturday’s race, she’s already embracing her growing role-model status as a spokeswoman for females in the industry.

“It really comes down to a talent issue. if you’re talented, it really is not going to matter what sex you are,” she said. “Once you establish yourself, in my career and my experience, it only helps.”

Sent off at 13-1, believe You Can paid $29.60, $11.80 and $6.40. Broadway’s Alibi returned $6 and $4.20, and favorite Grace Hall paid $3.20 to show.

Napravnik also took her next scheduled mount in the 12th race, and won that one, too.

Jones retired in the aftermath of eight Belles’ death and dealt with memory loss when it was discovered he had high levels of aluminum in his system. but he couldn’t stay away from long and once he returned, Jones continued his superb development of fillies, most notably Havre de Grace, last year’s Horse of the Year.

Havre de Grace was retired last month after injuring an ankle following a workout at Churchill Downs, another blow for Jones that’s softened now with his newest stable star.

Broadway’s Alibi had been looking for her fifth straight victory and was expected to push the pace. but Napravnik kept believe You Can close around the first turn in front of a crowd of 112,552, the second-largest in the race’s history.

Broadway’s Alibi, ridden by John Velazquez, led the field of 14 until Napravnik caught the leader in the final furlong and edged away to win by three-quarters of a length.

“I just had the horse underneath me. She’s just an excellent filly,” Napravnik said. “It’s cool to look beside you and see Johnny fading away.”

Jones said he keeps giving Napravnik horses and she keeps rewarding him with strong finishes. last year, the pair just missed an Oaks’ victory with St. John’s River, who lost by a neck in a photo finish.

That only motivated Napravnik more.

“Last year was kind of a tease. I was so close but not there,” she said. “This year I was determined to be the one in the winner’s circle and I had the right horse to do it.”

‘Raven’ for evermore entertaining

THE RAVENE.a. Poe, serial-killer hunter. Running time: 112 minutes. Rated R (gore, violence). At the E-Walk, the 19th Street, others.

‘but I’m only a critic!’’ exclaims a victim who’s about to be sliced up by a pendulum operated ax in “the Raven,’’ a thriller that posits—more entertainingly than convincingly — that Edgar Allan Poe spent the last five days of his life tracking down a serial killer inspired by his tales of terror.

The death of said critic (John Warnaby)—who was engaged in a literary feud with our hero— briefly casts suspicion on the drunken, mildly disheveled Poe, splendidly impersonated here by John Cusack (who, if nothing else, knows how to rock a cape).

Assured by Poe’s boss that “the only thing he’s ever killed was a pint of gin,’’ the detective (Luke Evans) assigned to the case in 1849 Baltimore enlists the assistance of the drunken author.

Poe is appalled that the fiend has already styled a pair of killings on “the Murders in the Rue Morgue,’’ and has left a note at the scene of the latest crime promising a real life update on “the Masque of the Red Death.’’

Despite the best efforts of the Baltimore police force, the anonymous fiend abducts Poe’s fiancée (Alice Eve) from a masked ball given by her muttonchopped father (the gleefully hamming Brendan Gleeson).

The villain treats the fiancée to a premature burial in a coffin—as she hopefully awaits rescue by Poe.

Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare’s script borders on the silly, and there’s more than a bit of anachronistic dialogue (the term “serial killer” wasn’t used until over a century later). And it’s a bit disappointing that the ultimately unmasked culprit turns out to basically be a 19th century fanboy trying to coax one more story from Poe’s hand.

But in the skilled hands of Cusack—who recites quite a bit of Poe’s poetry — and director John McTeigue (“V for Vendetta’’), it’s good pulpy fun, with eye catching period trimmings, and Hungarian locations standing in ably for 19th century Maryland.

I must confess I’m confused about exactly why “the Raven’’ ends with hardrocking “Se7en’’style credits. but then, what do I know? I’m only a critic.

Frankly, Humber had a hard baseball career until the White Sox picked him up last year, and he hasn’t had enough of a high profile to draw the attention of usual Christian athlete media like BP Sports and Sports Spectrum. but journalist J.C. Derrick apparently had a short profile ready to roll, and World magazine published it this afternoon.

“For so long, I was trying to make it about me,” Humber told Derrick. “I was going to make it happen because of how hard I was working. … but because of the road I took, I couldn’t deny the fact that it was God doing it, that God had a plan. … . Wherever we’re at, whatever we’re doing, that God will be glorified in what we’re doing. And he can be glorified in our low moments or in our best moments.”

Cain nearly perfect as Giants blank Pirates 5-0

SAN FRANCISCO—James McDonald took no pleasure in being the only player to reach base against Matt Cain.

As has been the case so far this season, even success for the Pittsburgh Pirates has been hard to celebrate.

Cain allowed only a single to the opposing pitcher in the sixth inning during a near-perfect performance Friday, throwing his third career one-hitter to lead the Giants past the Pirates 5-0 in San Francisco’s home opener.

“You think about, it’s like, ‘Man, the pitcher stood in his way for a perfect game,’” a somber McDonald said. “But it happens.”

Cain (1-0) struck out 11 and permitted just the lone runner in the fifth shutout and 14th complete game of his career. McDonald, a career .069 hitter coming into the game, lined a sharp single to left field with two outs in the sixth inning.

Fans in the sellout crowd of 41,138 jumped to their feet to give Cain a loud ovation on a sun-touched day along San Francisco Bay. the hit stood over the final 10 outs and remained the only blemish on Cain’s remarkable afternoon.

Leave it to another pitcher to prevent perfection.

“That’s the beauty of the game,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “A swinging bat is a dangerous bat. I should’ve hit him higher in the lineup.”

San Francisco backed the run-starved Cain for the 2012 home debut.

Aubrey Huff homered and drove in three runs as the Giants returned from a rough 2-4 road trip, getting swept at Arizona and taking two of three at Colorado. Buster Posey also hit an RBI double in his first regular-season game at AT&T Park since his season-ending injury in a collision at the plate with the Marlins’ Scott Cousins last May 25.

The Giants celebrated their 1962 World Series team and a large cast of Hall of Famers with an impressive day—blue skies and plenty of sun, too, after a huge rain and lightning storm overnight and into Friday morning threatened to make the festivities a mess.

Instead, Cain made the day sparkle even more.

Cain, who has long been the team’s hard-luck ace because of a lack of run support, went the distance in throwing 106 pitches—even more important considering bearded closer Brian Wilson wasn’t available after he worked a 32-pitch ninth inning a day earlier in a 4-2 win at Colorado. the game took only 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Pitching 11 days after signing a $127.5 million, six-year contract, Cain worked ahead all afternoon and faced only one three-ball count while retiring the first 17 batters in order until McDonald’s hit.

“I was definitely aware of it but I’m thinking there, ‘I’m behind in the count 2-1 but I’m throwing something to the outer third of the plate,” Cain said. “He put a good swing on it. He did his job. He can hit.”

McDonald (0-1) produced his seventh career hit but Pittsburgh dropped its fourth straight game after being swept at Dodger Stadium. He allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings, struck out one and walked three.

But as a pitcher, he was practically apologizing for his hit.

“He’d have been in the history books,” McDonald said. “If that was me, I’d be like, ‘Man, the pitcher got me. that (stinks). But I threw a great game.’”

McDonald couldn’t quite say the same.

Huff hit a two-run homer in the eighth. Nate Schierholtz had a pair of singles and drove in a run in the sixth for the Giants, trying to regain the rhythm from the improbable 2010 World Series title team. Pittsburgh, now just 2-5, is just trying to gain any kind of rhythm in what has been a horrid start offensively.

“The pitcher gets the hit off Cain, of all people. Good he was able to get it,” said Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who was 0 for 3. “Guess that’s the one positive we can get out of that.”

NOTES: Cain’s previous shutout came on June 8, 2010, at Cincinnati. … San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said Wilson would be ready to go for Saturday night. … the Giants sold out for the 85th straight time, a streak that began with the final three regular-season games of 2010. … Garrett Jones played his first game of the season in RF for Pittsburgh. … the Pirates will need to make a roster move Saturday if Charlie Morton comes off the disabled list to start.

Sacramento Kings’ New Arena to Be Settled at NBA Board of Governors Meetings »

A lot has been happening since the financing for the ‘new arena was approved by the Sacramento City Council on March 6. two weeks ago, it came out that the Maloofs—the owners of the Kings—were in disagreement with the city over who should pay the arena’s $3.26 million pre-development costs.

Ultimately, David Stern decided to advance the city $200,000 to cover the pre-development costs until the matter can be resolved at the NBA‘s Board of Governors meetings in New York on April 12 and 13.

Well, now the Board of Governors meetings are here. On April 12, the Maloofs made a 90-minute presentation in which they voiced their displeasure with the “term sheet” (the arena’s financing plan) that they negotiated with the city on Feb. 27.

Since the deal was never signed by the Maloofs, they have the option of backing out. But the owners insist they are committed to getting an arena built in Sacramento. the NBA, especially NBA commissioner David Stern, seems committed to keeping the team in Sacramento as well.

Commissioner Stern has asked Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson to attend the meetings on Friday, which Johnson’s agreed to do. But before Johnson left for New York, he fired off a letter to the Maloof family, conveying that the deal they agreed to on Feb. 27—and that was approved on March 6—is non-negotiable.

First, all parties agreed to a deal in Orlando on February 27th, codified in the term sheet subsequently approved by our City Council. At the time, George Maloof explained the Maloof Family’s reason for agreeing to the deal, saying to the Sacramento Bee that it is a “fair deal…worth taking.”

Any representation that a deal was not reached is simply not consistent with the perspective of every other party to the negotiation nor the actual statements of the family.

Later on in the letter, Mayor Johnson addressed the Maloofs’ desire to renegotiate the parameters of the deal.

Third, and most critically, under no circumstances will the City make material adjustments to the current terms of the deal. Put simply, we have done our part.

We are 100% committed to moving forward under the framework laid out in the term sheet.

And there should be no expectation in tomorrow’s conversation that this deal is subject to further negotiation.

Johnson then finished strongly, reminding the Maloofs to honor the agreement that they supported at the time.

We take you at your word that you are committed to Sacramento as you’ve said repeatedly in recent weeks.

The best – and only – way to demonstrate that commitment is to honor the “fair deal” as all other parties have done. your handshake is your handshake. your promise is your promise.

Given all that the people of Sacramento have endured and achieved on your behalf, we deserve nothing less than a partner who will work with the city in good faith and as a true partner.

With the meetings scheduled to conclude on Friday, and with Mayor Johnson slated to attend, this should be settled quickly.

The city and the Kings say they’re committed to each other, so it’s possible they can work everything out. But if they can’t, then the whole arena deal could fall apart only five weeks after it was approved.

iPhone 4 Owners Can Now Collect $15 ‘Antennagate’ Settlement

Apple iPhone 4 owners who did not collect a free bumper from Apple following the so-called “Antennagate” scandal can now collect their $15 settlement payment.

Users can file a claim for their cash payout at the iphone4settlement.com website, which just went live. according to the site, iPhone 4 owners have from now until Aug. 28 to file a claim.

The settlement is available to original iPhone 4 owners living in the U.S. who purchased the device on or before Feb. 17, 2012 and experienced antenna and reception issues. Those who already received a bumper or case from Apple are not eligible for the cash settlement.

Some 25 million owners of iPhone 4 smartphones make up the class in the recently settled “Antennagate” lawsuit. The settlement combined 18 individual lawsuits into one, and claimed Apple misrepresented itself by, “concealing material information in the marketing, advertising, sale, and servicing of its iPhone 4—particularly as it relates to the quality of the mobile phone antenna and reception and related software.”

The problem dates back to 2010 when Apple launched the iPhone 4. Shortly after the device hit the market, new iPhone 4 owners realized their signal quality dropped when they held their phone in a particular way. namely, touching the outside rim of the phone where the two parts of the metal casing/antenna met would interfere with the signal, and cause enough signal degradation to ruin a call.

Apple’s late co-founder, Steve Jobs, famously responded to a consumer by suggesting that he wouldn’t have reception problems if he would simply “avoid holding it that way.” Jobs later appeared at a press event to announce the free bumper offer, which is also an option.

Will you be claiming the $15 payment? let us know in the comments.
