Kevin Garnett this Year’s Playoff MVP?

The kids, as it turns out, were all right. And in (Kevin) Garnett’s case, that kid-turned-grown-man is still lashing out, still thumping his chest and screaming and inflicting all manner of basketball abuse.

Still chasing another championship before it’s all over. Chasing it while he still can.

The star of the playoffs isn’t (Kevin) Durant or (Chris) Paul or anyone on the Heat. It isn’t one of the up-and-comers, the next generation that’s pushing out what, in the mid-1990s, had been the NBA’s most pivotal crop of young players, maybe ever. the star of these playoffs is the old agitator, Garnett, who tore a possibly irreparable hole in the Sixers with 27 points and 13 rebounds Wednesday night in a 107-91 beatdown that gave the Celtics a 2-1 series lead.

“We worked so hard to get where we are at,” Garnett said quietly, almost in a whisper, in the visiting locker room afterward. “And we got there together.”

Stardom for Oklahoma City forward Durant almost never came to be

Decrease font Decrease fontEnlarge font Enlarge font

The NBA would go on without Kevin Durant, but it certainly wouldn’t be the same.

LeBron James would have a larger lead in the latest MVP race, the Lakers would be their relevant and theatrical selves and commissioner David Stern would still be hoping that all these compelling storylines — from young Derrick Rose and his Bulls to the ageless Big Three and their Spurs to the Chris Paul-led Clippers — were enough to take the stain off this lockout-shortened season. but something special would be missing without the willowy wonder from Oklahoma City, a unique talent who has all the makings of an all-time great and just became the first player to lead the league in scoring three straight times since Michael Jordan from 1995-98.

There were times during Durant’s early years in Seat Pleasant, Md., when this was a possibility, when the gangly kid who wasn’t sure he was good enough nearly gave up his future profession because, well, it was already feeling like the job he didn’t want. It was a dark chapter in his otherwise-blissful basketball life, a stretch of about two years when he occasionally questioned if all the work was worth it and considered quitting more than once.

The first time, according to Durant, took place in seventh grade while he was at Drew-Freeman Middle School. His mother was pushing him into the Seat Pleasant Recreation Center, the local gym some 10 miles east of Washington, D.C., where he sometimes studied and slept in between training sessions. His coach, a man named Taras "Stink" Brown, whom Durant considered his godfather, punished him with grueling workouts that hardly ever involved the use of a ball. all the extra pain came with a price, and Durant decided it wasn’t paying off.

"I told my godfather, who worked me out every day, I said, ‘I don’t feel like playing basketball no more,’ " Durant told SI.com recently. "It took me a while to tell him, but I had come to the gym and I’d been at home thinking about it, and I thought, ‘I can’t go through this no more.’ It was tough. God was testing me, and I was on my way to failing.

"As a kid, you want to play and have fun and go through things as a regular kid. but I wasn’t. I was always in the gym, always training. I was running hills, doing 100 laps a day. Basketball was the fun part. I barely touched the ball, but had the push-ups and the sit-ups — all of it. I was like, ‘Why do I have to go through this boot camp when I see the other guys not working as hard as me and they’re out there playing well on the AAU circuit?’ They’ve got high schools looking at them, private schools, and it wasn’t like that for me."

Brown, who worked in concert with Durant’s mother during those developmental days, wasn’t impressed with the decision.

"He said, ‘If you can’t play basketball, then you ought to be a ballet dancer,’ " Durant said. "I was like, ‘Nah, man, I can’t do that. I’m just going to quit.’

"He said, ‘Don’t talk to me, don’t come back, unless you want to be a basketball player.’ after a few days, I changed my mind. My mom was on top of me, too, and I got through it."

Some six years later, Durant was taken second in the draft out of Texas and the thought of him making a living anywhere other than on a basketball court seemed unfathomable. He has made a quick ascension up the league’s totem pole of stars, winning the Rookie of the Year award in 2008, earning his first of three All-Star nods in 2010 and capturing the last two scoring titles with his ridiculous range and repertoire. now he faces his most important postseason yet with the Thunder, who won the Northwest Division title and enter the playoffs this weekend as the no. 2 seed in the Western Conference.

If Oklahoma City had not dropped seven of its final 14 games and fallen out of the top spot in the West, all of Durant’s work could have him leading the MVP race. still, he edged Kobe Bryant for the scoring title with a 28-point average, and he set career highs in rebounds (8.0), assists (3.5), blocks (1.2) and field-goal percentage (49.6). While his first MVP would certainly be welcome, a third scoring title has put him in an elite group that includes Jordan, George Mikan, Neil Johnston, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob McAdoo and George Gervin.

GALLERY: CLOSEST NBA SCORING RACES

"I’d be lying if I told you I never think about [the MVP]," Durant admitted. "Growing up, I didn’t even think I’d be in the NBA, much less college. So to be one of the main guys on a really good team, with a great organization? I fell into a great situation. I’m so blessed that I’m here, but if I ever do become MVP? Man, individually that would mean a lot to me."

But the collective work is more meaningful to Durant. This is a new test for the fifth-year player, a postseason in which he — along with Russell Westbrook, James Harden and the rest — will no longer have the luxury of being the newbie on this block. There are expectations now, assumptions that they’ll take the Thunder farther than ever before.

After going a combined 43-121 in Durant’s first two seasons, the Thunder fell to the Lakers in the first round in 2009 before progressing to the Western Conference finals last season and being eliminated by the eventual champion Mavericks in five games. Durant, per his norm, isn’t about to emulate LeBron James’ ways when it comes to predicting championships either.

"I’m never going to say we can win a championship, or we’re going to win a championship," he said. "I’m going to take it a day at a time, and you never know what will happen."

His path to this point proved as much.

Pro sports is full of athletes whose destinies were nearly derailed, none more famous than Jordan and his exclusion from the varsity team at Laney High in Wilmington, N.C. but Durant’s is puzzling because it is a paradox, this idea that a player widely known now as a tireless worker was going to quit because he was tired of working so hard.

Worcester Telegram & Gazette – telegram.com – NCAA basketball: Bradley Beal, Florida beat Marquette

PHOENIX —  almost every time he touches the ball, Bradley Beal does something special. his latest bit of basketball wizardry moved Florida a win away from the Final Four and set up Billy Donovan with a perfectly scripted matchup against his old coach and boss, Rick Pitino. Beal, the freshman with NBA written all over him, scored 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting last night to help the Gators to a 68-58 victory over Marquette. next up for No. 7 Florida (26-10) is a West Regional final tomorrow against Louisville and Pitino, who taught ol’ Billy the Kid a lot of what he knows. Lesson No. 1 on any coach’s list, of course, would be to get good players. On this night, Beal was the best on the court. He also had six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots, including one on Jae Crowder while the third-seeded Golden Eagles (27-8) were desperately trying to claw back after trailing by 14. Crowder, a senior and the big East player of the year, never found his touch. He finished with 15 points on 5-for-15 shooting while another Marquette senior, Darius Johnson-Odom, also went 5 for 15 in a struggle to reach 14 points. Buzz Williams’ team shot 31 percent and was held 18 points under its season average. Erving Walker had 11 for the Gators, including a 3-pointer that came after Patric Young scrapped for an offensive rebound with 2:05 left. It snapped a 6-0 Marquette run that pulled the third-seeded Golden Eagles (27-8) to within six. But the biggest difference maker was Beal, a high school national player of the year whom Donovan has been pushing to be more assertive. In the second half, he served up about five perfect examples of what he can do when he steps up a bit. Blanketed by Marquette’s Todd Mayo, Beal hesitated, took a stutter step, then breezed past him for a reverse layup that would’ve made George Gervin proud. It was the second time he’d blown past Mayo for a layup. He also had a 3-pointer, a couple of free throws and a pretty assist to Young to help the Gators go up 56-44 with less than five minutes left. For cappers — he dunked for the last points of the game, leaving him one short of the high-water scoring mark of his one-year — one-and-done? — college career. this is Florida’s second straight trip to the regional final. Last year, the Gators lost to Butler — one of the NCAA tournament’s great stories of 2010 and 2011. an early candidate for 2012 could be this coaching showdown. Donovan was the undersized-but-gritty guard who helped Pitino and Providence make a run into the Final Four back in 1987. a bit later, Donovan went against his mentor’s advice, quit a job on Wall Street then came to be Pitino’s assistant. a great coaching mind was born and now Donovan has two national titles and three trips to the Final Four, compared to one championship and five Final Fours for his old boss. Pitino is 6-0 against Donovan, two of those in Florida-Louisville matchups. Marquette, meanwhile, exits the tournament in the round of 16 for the second straight year. Crowder picked up two early fouls and couldn’t get into an early flow. Mayo had 11 for Marquette, which was trying to get back to the Final Four for the first time since 2003. Kenny Boynton (11 points) made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to ice it for the Gators, who won back-to-back titles in 2006-07. Articles Most Read Today

Knicks sign J.R. Smith, waive Balkman

Smith is returning to the NBA from China, where he signed to play during the lockout. he was ineligible to return until his team had completed its season and FIBA, basketball’s governing body, had given him clearance.

Smith had declared his intentions to reunite with former Denver teammate Carmelo Anthony earlier in the day on Twitter, saying “New York Knicks it is!’’

The Knicks still had their two-year exception, worth about $2.5 million a year, to offer. the second year of the deal is at Smith’s option.

Smith is a streaky shooter with deep range and has averaged 12.5 points in the NBA since he was the no. 18 pick by the Hornets in the 2004 draft. he spent the last five seasons with the Nuggets, twice scoring more than 15 points per game.

Grunwald said Smith shot around 50 percent from 3-point range while playing for Zhejiang of the Chinese Basketball Association. the Knicks rank 26th in the league from behind the arc.

But the Knicks are taking a chance of messing up the chemistry they have developed while winning seven straight games behind Jeremy Lin. plus, Smith has developed a reputation as a chucker.

“He’s not stopping the ball, that’s for sure,’’ coach Mike D’Antoni joked, flicking his hand as if we he were taking a shot.

Plus, Smith is also temperamental and has clashed with teammates and coaches, plus spent time in jail on a reckless driving charge.

“We had people that had let’s say inside personal experience with J.R. and they all came out in favor of this move,’’ said Grunwald, mentioning director of pro player personnel Mark Warkentien, Denver’s former general manager. “We talked to a lot of people, we are comfortable with the decision we made and we’re hopeful that it’s all going to work out for the best.’’

Smith won’t arrive until Saturday night and won’t get a chance to practice, so it’s doubtful he plays Sunday against Dallas.

“I don’t think so,’’ D’Antoni said. “That’s a little much.’’

To make room on the roster, the Knicks waived forward Renaldo Balkman.

In Flex We Trust » NBA: Larry Bird Believes LeBron James Will Win Multiple Titles

Posted by Sabrina B. @gametimegirl

Larry Bird jumped on the Dan Patrick Show earlier this week, and the conversation covered Bird’s Pacers, Magic Johnson, and then Patrick asked Bird if he thought LeBron James had a killer instinct.  Check what he had to say after the jump…

“Everybody is a little different but I will tell you what. That LeBron James is about as good as I’ve ever seen. I mean this guy is unbelievable. I’m not going to say he’s a Michael Jordan and all that, but he ain’t too far behind. he ain’t too far behind Kobe either. he just hasn’t made some plays down the stretch and he will. he will win multiple championships before he’s out of this league. you can’t be as good as him and not win.”

What do you guys think???

Report: Wizards fire Flip Saunders after 2-15 start

The Washington Wizards fired coach Flip Saunders after the team started the season an NBA-worst 2-15, according to multiple reports.

Assistant coach Randy Wittman has been promoted to replace Saunders.

In more than three years with Washington, Saunders led the Wizards to a 51-130 record. he was in the third year of a four-year, $18 million contract.

The team lost its first eight games of the season, and hadn’t improved much since then. John Wall has been disappointing thus far in his second season, and the offense has struggled, ranking 27th with 88.6 points per game.

The Bulls visit the Wizards on Monday.

NBA Rookie Guards Stepping Up

With Blake Griffin out until his knee heals, the rookie guards have truly stepped up their efforts attempting to make a run for ROY 2009-2010. Several first years guards such as Stephen Curry, Johnny Flynn have done well for Golden State and Minnesota but the three rookie guards that have impressed me during the early season are Tyreke Evans, Ty Lawson, and ROY front runner Brandon Jennings. Let’s concentrate on those three guards for now and here’s what I’ve scene:

Ty Lawson – former Tarheel guard will gain the most experience by learning the game from Chauncey Billups. with the tutelage of Billups, Lawson will learn when to shoot, breakdown the defense, and when to take the big shot which will pay off in the long run when Billups time is up. two weeks into the season and he’s already developing when to attack the rim. just ask DJ

Tyreke Evans – Labeled as one of the Chosen one since HS. the Kings had no choice but to stick Evans into the starting lineup and as a result, four straight wins along with a scoring average over 20 ppg. Evans style of play has always been NBA ready and the transition has not been difficult thus far. He’ll take a lot of L’s this year but he’ll score a ton.

Brandon Jennings – He’s a clone of Kenny Anderson & Nick Van Exel. Expect the Compton PG to lead all rookies in assist and challenge Derrick Rose as the best point guard in the NBA Central. right now Jennings only knows one speed but once he develops a half court game. scary Oh. if you don’t think he’s real just ask the Golden State Warriors.

Rajon Rondo Dunk – How to Jump Higher Without Calf Raises and Squats

Did you see Rajon Rondo dunk on Jason Maxiell? What about his baseline jam on Vince Carter? not only fans know that the Boston Celtic Rajon Rondo is quick. But most people don’t even suppose he can jump that high.

Actually, standing at only 6’1”, Rondo is one of the best rebounding guards in the NBA as he grabs 5,3 boards per game. He’s in fifth place this season (2008-2009), right behind Kobe Bryant, who is 6’6”. so it’s obvious that the 22-year old Celtic can jump. his vertical might be in the 38-inch area. But the cool thing about vertical jump is that you can increase it with special exercises.

Now we all have heard about squats, calf raises and lunges. These exercises are good and will help to improve your vertical, but they might not be the most effective ones. For that, try some plyometric exercises, as they are designed to improve your explosiveness. And this is a crucial factor in the jumping process, as it’s not only about muscle strength, but quickness. Here are two exercises that will boost your explosiveness:

1) Burnouts: Stand on your tiptoes. Now jump as quickly as you can about 1/2 to 1 inch off of the ground. do about 50 repetitions per set.

2) Step ups. For this exercise you need a stable box or chair. put one foot on the box/ chair that your thigh is parallel to the ground. Now use this leg to push yourself off of the chair and jump in the air as high as possible. Try to switch the legs in the air so that you land with the other leg on the box/ chair.

Another basic exercise that will improve your quickness are Wind Sprints (sprint for 60 meters, then rest for 20 seconds, 4 reps, 3 times a week). But those exercises are worthless if you don’t know how exactly you have to do them and how many repetitions/ sets are effective. A lot of people are highly motivated and overtrain at the beginning. They simply jump too much and don’t really care about proper execution of the exercises which is crucial. Doing so they only train their jumping endurance which is actually counterproductive if you want to improve your explosiveness. They don’t really gain inches on their vertical jump and give up.
