Eagles, WR Jackson agree on 5-year deal

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — DeSean Jackson got his wish after all.

Jackson agreed to a five-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. the deal is worth $51 million, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because terms weren’t officially announced.

The two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver already was tagged as the franchise player, meaning he would’ve earned at least $9.4 million next season. Now, he gets the long-term security he sought last year.

Jackson held out last training camp because he wanted an extension and let the contract situation affect him. He was deactivated for a game for being late for a team meeting, dropped more passes than usual and his production dropped. But the Eagles are counting on Jackson to be the dynamic player he was in 2009-10.

"We are thrilled to be able to keep one of the NFL’s top playmakers in Philadelphia," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "DeSean is a game breaker. He has the speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field, and he has proven himself to be a big threat for our offense."

Philadelphia stumbled to an 8-8 season last year, but closed with four consecutive victories, building momentum for 2012. the Eagles finished, despite a 4-8 start, just one game behind the New York Giants, who not only won the NFC East, but also the Super Bowl.

Jackson has career totals of 229 receptions, 4,085 yards and 21 touchdowns in four years as an Eagle after being drafted out of Cal. He also has three rushing scores and a franchise-record four punt return touchdowns, as well.

"Signing our own players was a big priority for us this offseason," Reid said. "and DeSean was certainly high on our list. We are very excited about his future as an Eagle."

Jackson, 25, was named to the Pro Bowl following the 2009 and 2010 seasons, and is one of five players in NFL history to at least 900 yards receiving in each of his four seasons.

Earlier in the day, defensive end Trent Cole and the Eagles agreed on a four-year contract extension through 2017, and on Tuesday, offensive tackle Todd Herremans agreed to a three-year contract extension through 2016.

The Eagles also made a couple of roster moves, trading offensive lineman Winston Justice to Indianapolis and releasing former starting center Jamaal Jackson.

Cole is a two-time Pro Bowl selection who ranks third on the team’s all-time list for sacks with 68. He had 11 sacks in 2011, his fourth season with a double-digit total.

"Trent plays the game with a level of tenacity that’s hard to replicate," Reid said. "He’s one of the premier defensive ends in the league."

While Jackson’s contract situation was somewhat contentious, Cole and Herremans never said a word about it.

"I think that with Todd and me, we conducted business professionally, the way it’s supposed to be conducted," Cole said. "We never went out to the media and complained. We did what we had to do to keep moving and we didn’t cause any problems with the team and this atmosphere."

With the key returnees, there’s a feeling – inside the organization, at least – that Philadelphia will return to its status as a perennial playoff team in the NFC.

"as the season went on, we started coming together a lot more and it showed by us winning our (last four) games," Herremans said. "We really feel that we don’t need any extra pieces brought to us in free agency. We feel that the team we have in the locker room can make a great run and go to the Super Bowl next year."

The Eagles spent plenty of money in free agency last year, signing several players with high pedigrees. they were expected to contend for the Super Bowl, and had to play under the "Dream Team" label that was attached to them by backup quarterback Vince Young, one of those high-priced signings that didn’t pan out.

Panthers change logo for first time

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have a new look.

For the first time since joining the NFL in 1995, the Panthers have changed their logo. according to a press release Sunday night, the logo has been designed to provide a “more aggressive, contemporary look to the logo while making it more three-dimensional for ever-increasing digital use.”

The Panthers will transition to the refined logo throughout 2012.

The primary tweaks made by the creative department of the NFL are primarily in the eye and mouth, where the features — particularly the muscular brow and fangs — are more pronounced, giving the panther a more menacing look. The new logo has a darker shade of blue over the black logo, compared to the former logo, which had teal on top of black.

“We have one of the finest and most recognizable logos in the NFL and wanted to make it as modern as possible without losing the dramatic essence of the mark,” team president Danny Morrison said.

The team also will change the primary logotype.

Information from The associated Press was used in this report.

LaDainian Tomlinson: Jets Locker Room Problems as Bad as He’s Been Around

On Sunday LaDainian Tomlinson pinned the Jets’ locker room problems on a rift between Mark Sanchez and the wide receivers. He took his statements even further during an interview on Inside the NFL.

“And I’ve been around some locker rooms and quarterback-receiver situations and what-not,” Tomlinson said. “But it was as bad as I’ve been around. You know it was at the point where I think the players could no longer do anything about it. There was nothing that the players could do. So when it gets to that point there are certain changes that need to happen.”

Tomlinson says the Santonio Holmes-Mark Sanchez feud was really bad.

“It got out-of-hand toward the end of the season,” he said. “That is why it got out in the media. this is something that happened (in the) third or fourth week of the season, that was going on, and nobody knew about it because the players kept it under wraps. Until we went on that losing streak and guys started to speak up and speak out about certain things.”

As if that’s not bad enough, LT blames the Jets organization for what happened.

“They (the organization) created this,” Tomlinson said. “This is the type of football team that they wanted. Mike Tannenbaum (and) Rex Ryan are both brash, in-your-face type of style, say whatever you want, just get it done on the field. And then it leads to other things (like) guys are calling each other out and saying I’m not getting the ball or whatever it may be.”

Tomlinson also wasn’t fond of Rex Ryan’s bold predictions.

“I would prefer him not to say it as much as he did,” Tomlinson said. “I don’t mind every now and again saying we are going to win a championship. Maybe at the beginning of the year just saying, ‘Hey, our goal is to win a championship.’ But at the same time every week if you are calling out a team on certain things, I think it puts a little extra on your team. Guys really want to go out there and say, ‘Let’s shut this guy up. Let’s shut these Jets up, just end their season.’ I think that adds to that when Rex speaks up like that because, you know, everybody doesn’t like that type of style, and they’re not supposed to. But at the same time there are certain things that you can do to not have it come off like that.”

What’s funny is how pleased Tomlinson seemed to be in 2010, his first year with the team. Back then he loved Rex Ryan’s approach and loved his new organization. Here’s what he said in October, 2010:

“People get on us for talking about winning the championship and things that we want to do here,” Tomlinson said. “But for me, if we’re going to talk about it — and I see the type of talent we have here — I want the guys to know what a guy like Vince Lombardi said about what it takes to be No. 1.”

He didn’t seem to mind talking about winning it all back then. So the issue remains: is it bad characters that led to the locker room problems, or is it losing? It’s always been said that winning cures all issues, and it’s hard to disagree with that.

The NFL Needs a College Influence and Tebow Could Help

Trends within the NFL seem to move faster than trends in College Football. We might see periods in the NFL where defense dominates and when that happens, all you really need is a safe quarterback that manages the offense with limited turnovers. Baltimore and Tampa Bay were two teams in the recent past with such a personality.

In the past few years, the teams with the best throwing quarterbacks are the ones that go deep into the playoffs. for example, the new England Patriots have virtually no defense and very little running game and they are heading to the playoffs as the number one seed in the AFC. It also appears that Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are set for an NFC showdown as the two best quarterbacks on that side of the bracket. the 6 or 7 best teams in the league all have quarterbacks capable of putting up 350 yards passing or more every game and all of the other teams are average at best.

One of the reasons I prefer college football is that there is such a wide variety of styles at that level. There is a big difference between the offense that Navy runs and the offense run at Southern California, but there’s not much difference in the offenses at the pro level. every team has pretty much the same portion of talent and that makes the game boring. for example, a beautiful woman would turn heads in a small town in the middle of the country but not in Southern California where they are all gorgeous. If they all look good then they are all average because none standout. In the NFL, the only difference is the Quarterback and the game plan.

So how can we jazz up the NFL? Well, by making it look more like College Football. We need more trick plays, more fake punts, and more Quarterbacks running with the football. and that’s where Tim Tebow can help. Some folks are hoping that Tebow can grow into a great throwing QB. I think it’s a better bet to hope that the style of managing the game with good defense comes back. Tebow would be more successful running that style but with all of the throwing going on, I certainly think that more players doing what he does would make the game more interesting.

I like it when my team is stronger than the other team but I love it when my team is smarter. With Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, you pretty much know what they are going to do. but with Tim Tebow, you have to figure out what he’s going to do because he has more possible options. the trend right now says that the Tom Brady way will bring you more championship rings, but sometimes, the Tebow way is more fun.

Kate Upton Linked To Mark Sanchez?!? This Deserves Some Hot Pictures (Gallery)

December 21, 2011, 11:15 am

Mark Sanchez is be carrying 13 interceptions and 8 wins into Week 16. In Mark’s 3 years in the NFL, this is by far his most disappointing season and Jets’ fans have been calling for blood for months. Fuck all that though, because I think we just found out what has mark distracted: Kate Upton. good enough. nobody knows anything for sure. Apparently she doesn’t even follow him on Twitter, a deal breaker if ever there was one. but if mark Sanchez is really taking that to the bedroom every night, possibly all season, we’re willing to give him a pass this year. Nice to know Kate is into class too. I’m looking at you Gisele.

Could Colt be replaced by Seneca in 2012?

An unexpected possibility has emerged for the role of No. 1 Cleveland Browns quarterback in 2012. That possibility is Seneca Wallace. Here’s how it conceivably could work: n President Mike Holmgren and his top men would conclude Colt McCoy is an NFL-quality quarterback, but not a preferred starter. n The brass would further conclude that Wallace has done intriguing work when thrust into the starter’s job and might be a winning quarterback if more preparation time was invested in him. n The top draft pick, which figures to be in the No. 5 overall range, would be spent on a quarterback to be groomed as the long-term starter. The initial plan would be to let him watch and learn, and to win with Wallace. n The brass would conclude that Wallace would have a decent chance to win with an upgraded supporting cast — a better chance than McCoy. all of that is speculative. This isn’t: Head coach Pat Shurmur did not hand the job back to McCoy on Monday in the wake of the Browns’ 20-17 overtime loss at Arizona Sunday, behind Wallace. McCoy missed the game with a concussion after throwing 463 of the Browns’ 465 passes in the previous 13 games, with a 74.6 rating. at Arizona, Wallace went 18 for 31 for 226 yards, with a 91.6 rating. McCoy was at the team complex Monday, and Shurmur said his condition was “improving.” when asked if McCoy will start Saturday at Baltimore if he receives medical clearance, Shurmur said: “We’ll cross that bridge when they’re both healthy, but right now, until Colt’s healthy, we’re gonna go with Seneca.” Acknowledging the stir that caused in the media room, Shurmur said, “Who else had that same question … I saw five hands go up. when Colt’s OK, we’ll talk about that. Good answer? all right.” what the brass really thinks of McCoy is the fuzziest answer in town. Was there ever a true consensus that McCoy gave the Browns a better chance to win than Wallace? Or was he simply deemed good enough for a long test drive, whereas Wallace, at 31, was more of a known quantity?  McCoy is 6-15 as a Browns starter, with a passer rating of 74.5. Wallace is 6-13 as an NFL starter, with a career passer rating of 84.4. one standard of comparison is uncanny, given the fact Wallace has been in the league seven years longer than McCoy. That is, Wallace has attempted 690 career passes. McCoy has thrown 685. President Mike Holmgren likes McCoy, but he has a much deeper past with Wallace. Wallace was a fourth-round draft pick when he joined Holmgren’s Seahawks in 2003. Wallace was Coach Holmgren’s last starting quarterback, going 3-5 in place of injured Matt Hasselback in 2008. Holmgren has said Wallace did remarkable work with a patchwork roster that year. his regard for Wallace was reflected in March when the Browns signed him to a three-year, $9 million contract — he is making more than McCoy, who is working under the rookie contract he signed as a No. 85 overall pick in 2010. Numbers aside, the result under Wallace was the same tired letter, an “L.” Wallace led the Browns on an opening, seven-play, 76-yard touchdown drive but failed to sustain what he started. “He did a good job on that first drive, then throughout the game, for the most part,’ Shurmur said. “Seneca did a lot of good things.” yet, Shurmur was careful to point out that McCoy’s first drive in a recent game at Cincinnati covered nine plays and 82 yards, ending in a touchdown. at Pittsburgh, the game in which he got hurt, McCoy’s first drive took the Browns 79 yards in eight plays to the 2-inch line before it stalled. Wallace didn’t get too full of himself over the Arizona game. “I take responsibility (for the loss),” he said. “I’ve got to make more plays for our team.” at this point, there is a good chance he will get the chance to try at Baltimore. if so, it will be more of a short, quick audition for 2012 that began in Arizona.

Lindsey Vonn watches Tim Tebow’s heroics from his family box

Lindsey Vonn says watching Tim Tebow lead the Broncos to another comeback Sunday was “incredible” and “really inspiring.”

She had one of the best seats in the house — in the Tebow family box.

But in case you get the wrong idea, she insists she and Tim Tebow are just good friends. Vonn, who announced last month that she is getting divored from husband Thomas Vonn, gets asked a lot about her relationship with Denver’s popular quarterback.

Tebow, meanwhile, helped the Broncos rally from a 10-0, fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Chicago Bears 13-10 in overtime.

The quarterback led Denver on two late scoring drives to force overtime, then took advantage of a Bears turnover in the extra session to drive for a 51-yard, game-clinching field goal by Matt Prater to seal the win.

It was Tebow’s seventh victory in eight starts this season and he now has six fourth-quarter, come-from-behind victories in just 11 NFL starts.

Vonn’s appearance at the game in the Tebow box led some to speculate that a relationship may be brewing between the two.

On Twitter, Vonn could not have been any more direct. She wrote: “Hearing a lot of crazy rumors but rest assured I am NOT dating Tim Tebow (or anyone else). I’m just friends with his family. xo, LV”

And Vonn wrote today in her blog for the Denver Post: “A lot of people are wondering what’s up with me and the Tebows. Tim Tebow presented her with an ESPY award this year, and “I said, ‘If you want to come up to Vail and ski, let me know,’” Vonn wrote in her blog.

Vonn says she knows the whole Tebow family now. And she admires Tim Tebow’s accomplishments.

“He’s proving them all wrong,” Vonn told the Associated Press last week. “In a way, that’s what I’m trying to do as well — to be able to compete under any circumstance and keep fighting and doing my best every day. Just because I `Tebow,’ doesn’t mean I’m dating him. I said that if I won in Colorado, I would `Tebow’ because I admire what he’s doing.

The hit drew a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty.

However, Harrison said after practice on Monday that he didn’t think the hit deserved a suspension.

Meanwhile, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said during his weekly press conference today that the team accepts the league’s ruling. he said he talked to the linebacker briefly on the phone.

Tomlin said during his press conference: “We’re disappointed for James because we know quite frankly how hard he’s worked to play within the rules. Obviously, he hit him. he hit him illegally and he has to suffer the consequences.”

Harrison was fined $125,000 last season for illegal hits.

As a result of the suspension, Harrison is not allowed to practice with the team this week. he is appealing the decision.

Tim Tebow Wins Again: Comparisons to John Elway Grow with Each Victory

Tim Tebow, likely the most polarizing player in the NFL, has done it again. his fairy-tale run at the helm of the Denver Broncos has continued with yet another dramatic come-from-behind victory.

This time, the Broncos returned from the brink of almost-certain defeat as they trailed the Chicago Bears 10-0 in Denver with only 4:34 remaining on the clock.

When the Broncos took control of the ball at their own 37-yard line following a six-yard punt return by Quan Cosby, they had gone scoreless over their first 11 possessions of the game. once again, Tebow came to the rescue, authoring an improbable comeback in the waning minutes of the game to force overtime, from which Denver eventually emerged victorious.

It began with the Broncos’ penultimate drive of the game, which consisted of seven consecutive completed passes from the left arm of Tebow. he led his offense 63 yards downfield, distributing his passes among four receivers before the drive culminated in a 10-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas.

After a failed onside kick, the Denver defense was able to hold Chicago, forcing the Bears to go three-and-out, returning possession to the Broncos with a punt which Quan Cosby returned nine yards to the Denver 20-yard line.

With only 53 seconds remaining and the Broncos trailing 10-7, Denver drove 39 yards on eight plays to set up a long field-goal attempt from the Chicago 41 with only three seconds on the clock.

As time expired, Broncos’ kicker Matt Prater drilled a 59-yard field goal, tied for the longest of his career, and sent the game into overtime, something which had seemed inconceivable only minutes before.

Justin Edmonds/Getty Images

Though the Bears won the coin toss in overtime, they were unable to produce a scoring drive, and once again turned over possession to the Broncos, this time via a Marion Barber fumble at the Denver 33-yard line.

Gifted the ball with Chicago within field goal range, Tebow and the Broncos didn’t waste the precious opportunity.

Over nine plays, he and the offense moved 33 yards downfield, setting up a 51-yard field goal attempt for Matt Prater, which he summarily converted. after he had his first field-goal attempt of the day blocked, Prater nailed two clutch field goals and an extra point within the final 4:34 of regulation and 6:26 of overtime.

The thrilling victory on their home field was the Broncos’ seventh in eight games, a successful run which coincides perfectly with Tebow’s reign as their starting quarterback. he is an astounding 7-1 since assuming the starting role from Denver’s original 2011 QB Kyle Orton, who is now with the Chiefs.

Another game, another chapter in the storybook season of Tebow, the young man who has become a sensation in only his second NFL season. the former University of Florida Heisman Trophy winner had been a high-profile firebrand even before becoming an NFL regular.

His brilliant collegiate career made him an amateur gridiron star, but his personality and occasionally controversial Christian beliefs made him an oft-discussed player even before he has accomplished anything of significance at the professional level.

Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

Tebow’s status has been elevated dramatically in recent months however, as he has turned his once-struggling Denver team into an AFC West-leading playoff-bound machine. At 1-4 before his ascension to the starting role, the Broncos were destined for a lost season.

Now, seemingly week after week, Tebow performs a football miracle, leading his Broncos to stunning victories, often coming from behind late in contests.

In only 11 career starts, Tebow has now led his team to six victories when his team was losing at the beginning of the fourth quarter. with five victories of such a come-from-behind nature in his first 10 starts, Tebow tied an NFL record.

The left-handed QB’s tactics and mechanics aren’t always conventional, as his detractors deride his throwing motion and reliance upon scrambling. in a few games this season, he has had more rushing attempts than passes thrown.

His critics slam his completion rate, the strength of Denver’s schedule, his goodie-two-shoes image, perpetual evangelizing and, most of all, the national media’s obsession with the young QB.

Just as many people are horrendously sick of hearing about him as there are those singing his praises. the inexperienced QB has become a household name and has even inspired a popular meme, Tebowing, a craze inspired by his celebratory, prayerful, kneeling pose.

The national media cannot get enough of him, and the obsession has reached a fever pitch. his persona has transcended the game, inspiring water-cooler talk among those even far-removed from NFL fandom.

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images

Recently, my 80-year-old grandmother, whom I had never known to watch a single down of a football game, asked me about Tim Tebow.

Tebow’s recent heroics have drawn comparisons to a former Denver QB, legendary Hall of Famer John Elway. A two-time Super Bowl winner, Elway is an all-time great and now serves as the Broncos’ vice president of football operations.

Elway drew criticism from Tebow acolytes in November when he expressed doubt over the young QB’s hold on Denver’s starting position. when asked if he thought Tebow was the long-term quarterback solution, Elway said, “no,” while discussing the need for the team to improve their passing game and third-down conversion rate.

Once he was pilloried for his comments, Elway explained further to KOA-AM in Denver:

Am I hopeful that Tim Tebow is our guy? I am very hopeful that Tim Tebow is our guy. am I absolutely positive at this point in time? no, I’m not. but I want to believe that and that’s what I want to happen.

Those loyal to Tebow criticized Elway heavily for his commentary, painting the Denver legend’s words as “sour grapes,” coming from a man jealous of the younger QB’s growing stardom.

Tebow critics reveled in the fact that a football luminary of Elway’s stature was seemingly taking shots at the target of their scorn, validating their criticism.

However, Elway said nothing out of line, as the Broncos had been getting by with a low percentage of completed passes, as well as poor conversion of third-down situations.

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images

Let’s not forget though, that prior to Elway’s transformation into a legendary play caller and Super Bowl champion, he was once a 23-year-old fledgling QB with a poor completion percentage and a horrendous quarterback rating.

During the 1983 season, Elway’s first in the NFL, he played 11 games, 10 of them starts, and suffered through a difficult beginning to his eventually great career.

Though the 1983 Broncos finished the season 9-7 and made the playoffs, Elway was only 4-6 as a starter and was no more technically proficient than Tebow has been in his first year of regular action.

Over the course of his 11 games leading the Denver offense, Elway completed 123 of 259 attempts for a 47.5 percent completion rate. he threw seven touchdowns, but also 14 interceptions and finished the season with a lowly QB rating of 54.9.

John Elway would go on to craft a legendary career, built upon a legacy of clutch play and late-game heroics.

Not so unlike the auspicious early exploits of one mr. Tebow.

Of course, Elway’s legacy was built over the course of 16 NFL seasons, multiple runs deep into the playoffs, comprised of numerous fourth-quarter drives and comeback victories.

Tebow has not accomplished anything comparable yet, and he’s not ready to be christened the next great Broncos’ quarterback at this early stage.

However, the comparisons are too apt to ignore.

With such a propensity for heroics in the waning moments of games and dramatic, clutch play, Tebow is already crafting a reputation in the image of Denver’s once-great leader.

In 2011, Tebow’s first as the principal starting quarterback, he too has suffered from a poor completion percentage, only completing 96 of his 198 attempts for 48.5 percent success rate. Prior to the week 14 victory over Chicago, his QB rating was 87.9, though his rating in the fourth quarter was 109.6.

While his completion percentage leaves something to be desired, he has now thrown 11 TDs to only two interceptions. his rushing game has been one of his greatest assets, as he has rushed for 517 yards on 94 attempts and three touchdowns.

Most importantly to the Denver Broncos however, is that the young QB has continued to win.

However he does it, with a less-than aesthetically pleasing delivery and a poor completion percentage, Tebow keeps leading the Broncos to victory.

Criticize those aspects of his game if you must. Even mock his perpetually evangelical nature if his pervasive focus upon his faith grates upon your nerves.

One thing that cannot be denied, however, is his knack for winning.

Sure, Denver’s miraculous season turnaround could all come crashing down in the next two weeks, or even in a devastating first-round playoff exit as Elway’s 1983 season did.

Whichever way you lean on the issue of Tim Tebow, his story has been a compelling one and it won’t be going away soon.

In the midst of four consecutive fourth-quarter comebacks, Tim Tebow is creating a memorable season for the Broncos franchise and the fans in Denver.

Where it all ends has yet to be written, but the climax promises to be anything but boring.

Remember, even John Elway started somewhere.
