Spiderman comics auction expected to gross $25k

Spiderman’s legacy will be for sale when Ron Chase, a local businessman, parts with 450 issues of “the Amazing Spiderman” comic books in an auction scheduled for noon, June 24 at the Pahrump Nugget Events Center.

Chase is the owner of Express Auctions in Wheeler Springs Plaza and said when he came across the comic book collection several years ago, he bought it and said he feels the “time is right to resell it.”

He said with the release of the fourth Spiderman major motion picture, the character’s popularity is at an all-time high and some of the issues will bring over $1,000. the collection spans 35 years.

Chase knows his comics and the excitement shows in his voice as he talks about Spiderman’s August 1962 debut in the “Amazing Fantasy No. 15″ which is up for sale.

“the character was an immediate hit,” Chase said. “It wasn’t long before he had his own comic book.” the “web slinger” headlined in March 1963. And as Chase put it, “the rest is history.”

Since the first release, many other heroes and villians such as Sandman, the Punisher and the Lizard all made debuts in copies of the Amazing Spiderman comic books.

Chase has been selling books, including collectibles, on eBay since the popular web auction format became a household name. For this auction, he has partnered with Nevada Public Auctions to utilize resources including Proxibid, where a multiple-item, online auction can be viewed as a catalogued, singled event.

Those interested in the auction can see the online catalog from a link on Chase’s website www.tabas.com or see the actual comics at the preview scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 23 at the Nugget.

“This auction is attracting people from all over,” Chase said. “we haven’t done any marketing at all and I’ve got less than 100 bidders registered.” He said Proxibid will market the auction with an email blast to 125,000 opt-in participants which are a part of the company’s network.

Identities on Proxibid are kept private so when prospective buyers place a bid, all that is visible is the amount bid. As of Monday, the bid for the No. 15 was at $800, and the bid for Spiderman’s No. 1 is at $750.

Chase said the auction will appeal to Spiderman fans, comic collectors, investors and, “anyone who left them behind when they moved away from home.”

“There aren’t a lot of these left,” Chase said. “if a soldier went off to war and his mom cleaned up the room while he was gone, they most likely were tossed. they were considered toys.”

Chase said when he first acquired the collection all of the comics were “loose,” meaning they hadn’t been individually cased in plastic sleeves to protect the integrity of the pages as well as the art.

“I’ve had the most valuable 100 issues professionally graded and they’ve been professionally sealed in bags as well.” those issues are kept under lock and key.

Chase said most of the books are in “very good” to “excellent” shape.

The auction is expected to gross at least $25,000.

Apple profit surges on strong iPhone, iPad sales

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple inc.’s fiscal second-quarter profit jumped 94 percent as the consumer electronics giant reported strong sales of its iPhone and iPad products.

The computer giant’s shares jumped nearly eight percent in after-hours trading as results topped analysts’ expectations.

The latest results come after Apple reported a blockbuster first-quarter, hitting new sales and profit records, thanks to the surging popularity of its smartphone and tablet computer.

For the quarter ended March 31, Apple reported a profit of $11.62 billion, or $12.30 a share, up from $5.98 billion, or $6.40 a share, a year earlier. Revenue increased 59 percent to $39.19 billion, with 64 percent of the top line coming from international sales.

In January, the company projected earnings of about $8.50 a share on revenue of about $32.5 billion, above Wall Street’s estimates at the time. Analysts had most recently forecast a per-share profit of $10.04 and revenue of $36.81 billion. Gross margin widened to 47.4 percent from 41.4 percent.

The company’s iPhone continued to be a key driver of growth in the latest period, as Apple sold 35.1 million iPhone units last quarter, up 88 percent from the prior year’s total.

Apple sold 11.8 million iPad units in the most recent period, more than double from a year earlier. Apple began selling the third-generation iPad last month, the first major product launch for Apple since the latest iPhone went on sale in October. Apple had said it sold a record three million iPads in the product’s first weekend of sales.

The maker of computers and electronics devices, known for traditionally giving conservative guidance, said it expects third-quarter earnings of about $8.68 a share on revenue of about $34 billion. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast a profit of $9.93 a share on $37.45 billion in revenue.

Last month, Apple unveiled plans to return some of its cash hoard to shareholders by declaring a long-awaited quarterly dividend, its first in more than a decade, and authorized a $10 billion share repurchase program to begin in the quarter starting Sept. 30.

Apple sold 7.7 million iPod media players, a 15 percent decline. Apple has reported declining sales for the iPod in recent quarters although the unit has likely benefited from higher average selling prices, as more consumers gravitate toward the iPod Touch.

Apple ratchets up App Store security

(Credit:Apple)

iOS and iTunes users have been bumping into new and stricter security measures as they use their accounts.

The new security demands, apparently implemented yesterday, have been asking users to choose three security questions and answers that are then required to download a new app from the App Store. a backup e-mail address is also being required, presumably in case a user’s primary address and associated Apple ID become compromised.

In threads on the Apple Support forums, a number of users confused by the new security steps have sounded off because there was no official word from Apple prior to the new security requests.

As described by the next Web, a “Security Info Required” popup window explains that creating the backup or “rescue” e-mail address gives Apple a way to contact you if any account questions arise.

With the ever-growing popularity of theiPhone andiPad, more Apple users have been the victims of phishing attacks aimed at taking over their accounts, TNW noted. Some compromised accounts were used to purchase expensive apps.

The additional security is aimed at accounts that may have triggered a flag for one reason or another. I tried logging in and out of my iPhone and iTunes accounts, and no additional security requests popped up.

An Apple representative confirmed to CNET that the company has been rolling out the extra measures to shore up security.

iPhone 5 rumors: features Apple fans are looking forward

Apple iPhone 5 is making headlines long before it is launched. Rumors of all kinds are doing the rounds. People are so much fascinated by the Apple smart phone that they are always awaiting the launch of new versions. there is another angle to it. Apple competitors especially Samsung, HTC and Motorola are launching so much improved and better smart phones that Apple fans also expect the Cupertino based tech giant to fast track the launch of the next generation iPhone.

Samsung and HTC have taken the smart phone war to an altogether new level. They are launching smart phones with huge screens, great resolution and processors and different memory options. Apple on the other hand has stuck to the idea of launching one iPhone variant every year.

This is the reason that Apple fans want the next generation iPhone very early. the iPhone brand may be the world leader in popularity and in sales counts. But it is yet to have many necessary features that its competitors have. get through the rest of the article to see a pick of features that we all crave to see on the next major iPhone upgrade.

Apple fans are expecting much more for their next Apple phone. Besides bigger screen they want the Cupertino based tech giant to add a microHDMI port on its iPhone. Apple introduced full 1080p video output on iPhone 4S. However, users need to spend $39 to buy Apple’s Digital AV to send HD video to a TV monitor. If iPhones come with microHDMI out, one will only have to buy a $5 cable to connect the device with a TV. But Apple currently has a nice AirPlay Mirroring feature for streaming contents. But it should be far great if the device has HDMI out as well.

A latest Morgan Stanley report has given some credible insight into the next generation iPhone. the report hinted that iPhone 5 will be slimmer when it arrives later this year and could include a quad-mode chip from Qualcomm that would allow for 3G and LTE functionality across all “network flavors.” though the report suggested that Apple will remain impervious to a broader decline in consumer demand throughout the technology industry through the release of its third-generation iPad in the first half of 2012 and the launch of a thinner iPhone later this year, analyst Katy Huberty wrote in a note to investors detailing takeaways from a recent trip to Asia.

One more improvement that Apple fans want to see in the next generation iPhone is NFC. Near Field Communication (NFC) is really making rounds today. most of key Android tablets come with the NFC technology. it is actually a kind of bar-code replacement feature that helps users make payments at check-outs easily. Data transfer between NFC-enabled devices is also highly efficient.

Graphic Design Trends in 2011

Change is inevitable and in some cases, absolutely essential, especially when it is positive. Graphic designs and designers are known for the various changes they incorporate into website designs to make it more attractive and appealing to the visitor. Given that we are into the first quarter of 2011, there are already several trends doing the rounds in the graphic design business. Following are some of the main trends that you might consider when creating your own designs, whether for a portfolio or for a client.

Style Trends: Akin to fashion and clothes, graphic design trends are also seeing a comeback...

But the one thing that Apple fans are seeking to see in their new iPhone 5 is 4G compatibility. most of the top Android smart phones come with 4G compatibility and Apple is expected to follow the suit in this case. Right now, almost all high-end Android phones come with 4G LTE compatibility. But Apple, though named its recent iPhone versions like ‘4’ and ‘4S,’ has not yet implemented 4G antenna inside its flagship smartphone. most likely, iPhone 5 will be a 4G LTE gadget. Fortunately, Apple has iPhone deals with both Verizon and AT&T, the leading 4G LTE service providers in the country.

Solar Flare: Intense Space Weather Could Produce Gorgeous Aurora Borealis

25 captures the vivid, green of the Aurora Borealis over southwest Canada. The images were captured as the space station passed along the border of British Columbia and Washington state, near Vancouver Island, and then moved to southern Alberta near

The awareness and the popularity of the aurora borealis (the northern lights) has been growing over the past few years due to the approach of Solar Maximum in 2013, and I'm lucky enough to be on the fore front of the aurora.

Apparently due to a solar flare, we might be able to see an Aurora Borealis tonight and tomorrow night after midnight looking towards the North. I heard only in NC but who knows? It's be so lovely if I seen it tonight!!

Yes, THE aurora borealis, right here in new York City. It's actually happened before, when the Carrington Event occurred in 1859—at the time, the NY Times wrote that the people of new York City gathered on sidewalks and rooftops, adding, "the heavens

the effects will really only be felt by those flying on intercontinental routes – whose flights may be delayed and slightly re-routed – and night skywatchers, who may stand a better chance of seeing some impressive Northern Lights (aurora borealis)

How Apple could become a trillion-dollar company

Summary of key drivers:

Before we go any further, let’s first consider the historical trends of Apple’s main drivers of growth.

  1. iPhone market share: iPhone’s global mobile phone market share has steadily increased from zero at the start of 2007 to around 5.4% now. this may not seem like a big share, but Apple deals primarily in smartphones and we considered is the global mobile phone market, which includes a huge number of non-smartphones sold in emerging markets.
  2. iPhone pricing: iPhone pricing has in fact increased over the last two years and stands at around $630. the iPhone’s incredible popularity has helped Apple maintain premium pricing and command a huge 80% of the industry’s total profits in the fourth quarter of 2011.
  3. iPhone gross margins: Margins have declined since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, when it was over 60%, to around 55% in 2011.
  4. iPad unit sales: the iPad tablet was launched in April 2010 and sold around 15 million the first year. Year two saw iPad sales shoot up almost 275%.

1. faster increase in iPhone market share (+25%):

We expect iPhone’s share of the global mobile phone market to hit 13% by the end of our forecast period. However, the iPhone is Apple’s flagship product and contributes more than 50% of our price estimate. So, even a small outperformance in respect to market share will have a huge impact on Apple’s valuation.

The company has posted an average annual growth of close to 90% in iPhone sales over the last three years. Last quarter, the phone set a new record of 37 million unit sales, with the iPhone 4S playing a big role. if Apple continues to set the same scorching pace in coming years, the upside to our price estimate could be huge.

A number of factors could help Apple maintain its historical growth rates. Expanding operations in overseas markets, adding of new carriers and selling iPhones in emerging markets such as China present huge opportunities to increase market share. (See Apple can penetrate emerging markets by riding sidesaddle with more carriers.) Apple has already added two of China’s three carriers to its list of iPhone carriers and a deal with China Mobile is in the cards after a recent Qualcomm announcement.

Developed markets may see little traction for competing smartphones such as the BlackBerry and the Lumia, further bolstering Apple’s share. the release of a LTE-enabled iPhone 5 later this year could also see Apple beat previous quarterly records. these triggers could propel iPhone’s market share higher than we currently forecast.

There could be upside of 25% to our estimates if iPhone market share exceeds our current end-of-period estimate by 4.4%.

2. Slower decline in iPhone pricing (+20%):

We currently forecast average iPhone prices to decline to around $400 by the end of Trefis forecast period as Apple enters emerging markets, where increasing competition forces Apple to cut prices beyond the customary price-slashing of older models.

However, iPhone’s average pricing has increased over the last two years as continued demand for the newer as well as higher-end versions with more storage have supported prices while Apple has reduced prices for the older ones. Traditionally, Apple has targeted only higher-paying customers and not aimed for a mass market presence, unlike its competitors.

These factors could mean that iPhone pricing could decline at a slower rate than what we forecast. There could be an upside of 20% to our estimate for Apple stock if iPhone pricing remains resilient at the 2011 price of $630 till the end of the forecast period.

3. Slower decline to iPhone’s gross margins (+20%):

We currently estimate that the iPhone’s gross margins will decline to around 40% by the end of Trefis forecast period. However, if Apple manages to sustain higher iPhone pricing levels, its margins could also stay high.

Input costs are likely to remain constant or even decline as technology improves and Apple buys out smaller companies that help reduce its supply costs. Earlier this year, Apple announced that it had bought Israeli startup Anobit, a move that would bring down its NAND flash memory costs. Moreover, we have also seen Apple diligently manage its supply chain issues in the past. in the first quarter of last year, when the mobile phone industry was reeling from the supply-chain aftershocks of the earthquake in Japan, Apple managed to post better-than-expected iPhone sales. (see Apple avoids hiccups in supply chain, raising estimates on iPhone outlook).

If Apple continues to handle the pricing and input cost issues well, its gross margins may decline at a slower rate than what we forecast. if gross margins reach around 50% by the end of Trefis forecast period, there could be an upside of 20% to our price estimate for Apple stock.

4. faster increase in iPad unit sales (+15%):

The iPad debuted in early 2010, spawning a new market segment of mobile devices and sending Apple’s stock even higher. Many competitors have tried to enter this still relatively nascent market segment, but none have come close to threatening the iPad’s dominance. even the much touted Kindle fire, a 7-inch Amazon tablet was released last quarter, made hardly a dent to the iPad, which set a new record of more than 15 million unit sales in a single quarter.

A big reason for the recent runup is Apple’s March 7 media event, at which many observers expect a new iPad will be announced. the iPad is the second-most valuable business for Apple after the iPhone and accounts for just under 13% of our Apple price estimate, but if the nascent market sees an explosion in demand over the coming quarters, the iPad could command a bigger chunk.

Gartner estimates that the tablet market will grow to 326 million unit sales in 2015, or about a 50% average annual growth rate. if Apple is able to grow its iPad sales at only 35% annually, its sales at the end of 2018 would be around 330 million, nearly three times our current estimate of 120 million. that could add another 15% upside to our price estimate for Apple stock.

5. Slower decline in iPad pricing (+5%):

We currently forecast average iPad prices to decline to around $430 by the end of our forecast period. the iPad is part of a nascent market segment and subject to heavy competitive pressures from new entrants.

But even though the Kindle fire and the Barnes & Noble Nook undercut the iPad’s price by nearly half, the iPad’s sales were hardly affected. if the iPad continues to find as many takers as it has in the past, there may not be a pressing need for Apple to decrease its prices.

These factors could mean that the iPad pricing could decline at a slower rate than what we forecast. There could be an upside of 5% to our estimate for Apple stock if iPad pricing declines slowly to reach about $530 by the end of Trefis forecast period.

6. a new iProduct (+5%)

So far, we have considered only Apple’s existing products. What if Apple comes out with a new, innovative product such as the much rumored Apple TV set-top box? since it will be a new product and we have no idea what impact this would have on Apple’s valuation, we have not shown it in the illustration. therefore, we are assuming only a small 5% upside. But the halo effect of the iPhone and the iPad on the next iProduct could be huge, and the consequent upside to our price estimate much more than the 5% assumed.

But therein lies the biggest risk to Apple’s stock.

Apple’s success has hinged on its ability to surprise the market with one innovative product after another. should it fail even once, the market euphoria will die down. also, don’t forget the law of large numbers. Apple has so far bucked the trend by tapping nascent markets, or, as in the case of the iPad, by creating one.

But how long will the Apple juggernaut roll on? What we can say is that if Apple continues to rise as meteorically as it has in the recent past, the first trillion-dollar company may not be too far away.

Apple slashes iAd pricing again as AdMob onslaught continues?

iPhone maker is reportedly allowing brands to spend just $100,000 to initiate a campaign, down from the $1 million they were required to put up back in 2010.

(Credit:James Martin/CNET)

Apple’s iAd platform is in deep trouble, and theiPhone maker has decided to try new pricing to boost its popularity, according to a report.

Advertising industry watcher Ad Age reported yesterday, citing sources, that brands wanting to use iAd to promote their products will only need to put up $100,000 to start a campaign. When Apple launched iAd in 2010, the company required brands put up $1 million. back in December, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple had reduced that requirement to $400,000.

To quell some unrest among developers who hated the policy, Apple has also reportedly decided to charge brands only a single rate for every 1,000 ad impressions. Previously, Apple was charging that rate, as well as an additional fee whenever a user clicked on an ad.

Not to be left out, developers will also be getting more favorable terms, Ad Age reported. Rather than receive 60 percent of the revenue generated from ads within their applications, developers will now get 70 percent.

Apple has been trying desperately to chip away at AdMob’s lead in mobile advertising. However, the Google-owned company has been pulling away, capturing 24 percent of the U.S. mobile advertising market last year, up 5 percentage points year-over-year, according to research firm IDC. Apple, meanwhile, saw its share drop from 19 percent in 2010 to 15 percent last year. At the same time, Millennial Media has swooped in and captured the second-place spot in mobile ads with 17 percent share.

However, gauging the mobile advertising business is extremely difficult, and market share figures are constantly in flux. That’s why research firm eMarketer’s findings from last month look somewhat different from IDC’s. eMarketer reported that while Google’s AdMob owned 24.8 percent of the U.S. mobile ad market last year, Apple’s iAd was actually in second place with 18 percent share. Millennial Media’s market share stood at 17.7 percent, according to eMarketer.

Apple’s platform is at a bit of a disadvantage. Both AdMob and Millennial Media’s service are platform-agnostic, allowing developers to place those ads onAndroid, iOS, and even Windows Phone. Apple’s service, meanwhile, is exclusive to iOS.

Still, even when developers use iAd, they’re apparently not too pleased with the experience. in fact, David Barnard, developer at mobile app company App Cubby, told The Wall Street Journal late last year that just 13 percent of his apps’ ad requests were filled by iAd that and in the previous month, he had only generated $320 from the service.

Update 10 a.m. PTto include eMarketer stats.

8 Must See Horror Films for New Horror Fans

Written by: Cole

There are a lot of horror movies that have been recommended to me by friends, colleagues, family etc.  as they all know I’m a major buff for all things spooky, gory or just plain crazy, and they love having a chat to me about the films that give them the heeby-jeebies.  and because I try to be a nice person (most of the time!), I take on their recommendations with a big smile and the stereotypical “Ohh yeah, I’ve heard about that one…”.

I don’t like to make people feel bad, yet I can feel my eyes straining from trying not to roll my eyes when I get told just how unbelievably freaky ‘Paranormal Activity’ was.

So, needless to say, I only felt it was my honorable duty to create my own list of ‘must-sees’; these are the movies I feel any amateur to the genre should give a go.   But please remember, these are MY recommendations, not according to ratings or popularity!

1.  Cabin Fever For me, ‘Cabin Fever’ is everything I love in a horror movie.  It’s ridiculous, it’s hilarious and it has a whole lot of blood and guts (and infection-ridden flesh).  This movie encouraged the biggest crush on Eli Roth and really cemented my love for the genre.  All of the main characters are stereotypical – the ‘nice’ girl, the ‘nice’ boy, the token douche, the semi-retarded guy, the resident skank.

So of course it’s even better when the infection starts to kick in.  I love the cop (Giuseppe Andrews, who was by far my favourite in ‘Detroit Rock City’) and Dennis the pancake-loving kid was horror-comedy gold.  It’s movies with this much randomness that make me want more.  and more.  and more.

2.  the Evil Dead If Bruce Campbell is God then ‘The Evil Dead’ is the Holy Grail of horror movies.  Pre-Spiderman Sam Raimi (come to think of it, mostly pre-anything Sam Raimi) basically invented horror-comedy with this cabin-in-the-woods film.  while it is funny and extremely over-the-top, there are also legitimate scares.

I love that the effects are cheesy and even to watch this when it is over thirty years old, it still resonates with me the same way ‘Titanic’ resonates with others.  Kudos to the tree scene; forests will never be the same.

3.  the Strangers As strange (pardon the pun) as this might seem, this is the only movie that has really ever scared me.  as in I-can’t-sleep-because-there-are-monsters-under-my-bed scary.  You cannot watch this movie without a late night, no lights on and possibly a cushion to hide under.

Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are pretty typical to watch as their house, and themselves, is abducted by masked strangers.  It isn’t so much their acting that makes the film, it is the fact that stuff like this could actually happen.  That’s always what scares me the most.

 4.  Ginger Snaps Low-budget cult hit ‘Ginger Snaps’ often flies under the radar when it comes to horror lists.  It is such a smart, quick-witted movie with a lot of social relevance that I don’t understand how people miss it.  Werewolves are quite often hard to get right (‘Cursed’ anyone?) but somehow this movie nails it.

Katharine Isabelle hasn’t really contributed much to anything since this film but I recently realised it is indeed Emily Perkins on ‘Supernatural’ lately (as Becky).  But otherwise this is a fairly B-grade (C-grade?  Z-grade?) cast – Mimi Rogers kills it as the girls’ oblivious mother.  I would be pretty disappointed if anyone hated this film because it is extremely entertaining and shizzes all over some of those straight-to-DVD suckfests we ‘love’ so much.

5.  Drag me to Hell A lot of people I have spoken to about this movie hated it. Completely and utterly hated it.  me, on the other hand, absolutely loved it.  I have watched it so many times; I think I’m just relieved there is hope for modern horror yet.  Sam Raimi once again blends horror and comedy seamlessly to create my favourite movie of 2009 (is it really that long ago?).

Alison Lohman is extremely likeable as the lovely Christine and hot-geek Justin Long is his usually self as Clay, Christine’s boyfriend.  the real star of the show (apart from the talking satanic goat) is Lorna Raver as the incredibly creepy and absolutely disgusting mrs. Ganush.  never again will loan officers decline extensions to crazy gypsy ladies. or wear buttoned coats.

6.  American Psycho Ohh, Christian Bale.  I don’t care if you rant like a loony on film sets or sound like a douche and get hurried along in your Oscar speech.  I will never forget you as Patrick Bateman, young hotshot New York banker/crazy chainsaw-nail-gun-weilding lunatic.

If you’ve read Bret Easton Ellis’ book you’ll become even more immersed in Bateman’s world of success-at-any-cost.  the best thing about this film is the questions it leads into at the end.  Was it really all in his head?  Can people be that obsessed with business cards?  Please can I grate cheese on Bale’s abs?

 7.  Slither I think ‘Slither’ is kind of like ‘The Fly’ for the new generation.  while I really enjoyed the latter, ‘Slither’ was a film in it’s own right, a diamond in the rough of gore-porn.  Michael Rooker is amazing as Grant Grant who becomes infested with the alien plague taking over his town.  I think the poster for this film sets it up completely.

Nathan Fillion is cool as the local cop while Elizabeth Banks rocks it as Grant’s long-suffering wife.  This movie is as funny and cheeky as it is disgusting and creepy.

8.  Freddy vs. Jason Although this is probably not my favourite of all the Nightmare movies (or Friday movies, for that fact), it is such a ridiculous piece of work that you can’t help but love it.  the characters are horrific, the kills are hilarious and I’m pretty sure you’ll need to watch this on your 50-inch to ensure enough room for Monica Keena’s lips.

Robert Englund is gold in his usual Freddy pants and he makes a mockery of Jason throughout the whole film.  I love that I don’t have to think while I watch; it is complete and utter junk food and anyone with half a brain (or less) needs to watch this.

I know, I know, I have left off quite a lot.  But these are the ones I feel are most relevant for new-gen teenyboppers to start their love of horror movies – then we’ll get to Kurt Russell’s jeans in ‘The Thing’…

Lionel Ritchie – Still Truly Romantic and Easy

Lionel Ritchie is known for his romantic, easy-listening ballads which he composed and sang himself. Songs such as Easy, Three Times A Lady, still, and truly have topped the charts and are still very popular across the generations.

Lionel was born in Tuskegee, Alabama on June 20, 1949. he spent his early years on the campus of Tuskegee Institute and later moved to Illinois, where he completed his high school studies at Joliet Township High School, East Campus. His skills in tennis earned him a scholarship at the Tuskegee Institute where he graduated with a major in economics.

In addition to his sports activities while at school in Tuskegee, he also formed different R&B groups during the mid-60s. One of these was the Commodores that he not so much started, but joined in 1968 as a saxophonist, and unbeknown to him at the time, his future was secured. the group acted as a support act to the Jacksons who were at the height of their popularity at the time. the Commodores’ first recording contract was with Atlantic Records, but they moved to Motown Records after just one recording.

This was an intelligent move, and at Motown the band established its name with danceable funky sounds such as Machine Gun and Brick House. it was also at this time that Lionel started making his way to the mainstream as a songwriter and solo performer.

He became identified with easy-listening romantic ballads which he wrote and performed himself. His songwriting skills became more appreciated and recognized during the late 1970s when he wrote songs for other artists, rather than just for himself. His composition Lady for Kenny Rogers made it to the top of the charts in 1980 and Rogers insisted that Lionel produce his album Share your Love in 1981.

He sang a duet with Diana Ross in 1981, Endless Love, a theme song for the film of the same title. Considered as one of Motown’s biggest hits, this single topped the UK and US pop charts, and in 1982, Ritchie decided to take on a solo career.

This move gave Lionel Ritchie recognition as an American singer, songwriter and record producer who sold over 100 million records. In 1982, his self-titled debut album Lionel Ritchie was able to make three hit singles. One of the three that still contained his Commodores style was the chart-topping truly. this single launched his career to instant popularity and included him in the list as one of the most successful balladeers of the 80s. the other two hit songs that hit the top 5 were You Are and My Love.

With his first album having sold more than 4 million copies and hitting no. 3 on the charts, a follow up album titled Can’t slow down was released in 1983. this one surpassed the first, selling more that 8 million copies and won the Grammy award for Album of the Year. the album contained his no. 1 hit all Night Long, very effectively promoted by a colorful music video that enhanced the Caribbean flavor of the song.

A string of four top ten hits followed in 1994, including the Number One hit Hello that took him away from his R&B image and was also his most successful recording. the other three were Stuck on You at no.3, Running with the Night at no.7, and Penny Lover at no.8.

In 1985, he wrote and performed say You, say Me which stayed no.1 in the US Charts for four weeks. this theme song for the film White Nights earned him the Number 1 song of 1985 and one critic’ description of him as the black Barry Manilow. rather an insult to many of Lionel’s fans another achievement of the year was his teamwork with Michael Jackson’s charitable trust that resulted to the no.1 hit single We Are the World by USA for Africa.

Another successful album titled Dancing on the Ceiling was released in 1986. this contained among others his aforementioned hits say You, say Me and Dancing on the Ceiling, and also Ballerina Girl, and Se La. it is here where the effective use of music video accompanied the title cut, and was also in the same lively tempo of all Night Long (All Night). after this successful album, Ritchie’s career slowed down while he was taking care of his ill father Lionel Ritchie, Sr. in Alabama who died in 1990.

In 1992, he released his album back to front, a collection of his first greatest-hits, after which he maintained a very limited public exposure. it was in 1996 when he decided to return with the release of Louder than Words, a song that showed he had not lost his skills of well-crafted soul music. however, it did not receive the same acclaim that is 1980s works received – perhaps due to his lack of exposure over the preceding couple of years.

Lionel’s married and family life was a combination of ups and downs. In 1975, he married his college sweetheart Brenda Harvey. Their marriage didn’t work well and they separated, after which Lionel had a relationship with Diane Alexander in 1986. Brenda discovered the affair in 1988 and their divorce was finally declared on August 9, 1993 after 17 years of marriage.

Lionel married Diane Alexander on December 21, 1995 but divorced in January 2004. they had a son, Miles Brochman born on May 27, 1994 and a daughter Sofia born on August 26, 1998.

Although his solo singing career did not manage to take off the second time, Ritchie was still able to produce six top 80 singles in the UK after 2004. he also made a few live appearances on some special occasions, and appeared on top Gear, a British motoring TV series. the segment was Star in a Reasonably Priced Car where he was featured with his Suzuki Liana and interviewed by host Jeremy Clarkson.

He was also reunited with Kenny Rogers on a CMT crossroads special. Their friendship both in and out of the music world was featured in this November 2005 episode. Ritchie also hosted and performed on the British TV show An Audience with Lionel Ritchie on December 9, 2006. he was able to perform his hit song Hello during the Grammy Awards on February 11, 2007, and the grand finale performing all Night Long (All Night) on the Australian Idol show on November 25, 2007.

His more recent performances include the new Year’s Eve at Time’s Square on December 31, 2008, and on the Season 8 of American idol with contestant Danny Gokey on May 20, 2009. Ritchie received the George and Ina Gershwin Lifetime Achievement Award on May 2, 2008, making him the 21st recipient of this prestigious award.
