Millions witness Pacific 'ring of fire' eclipse

Tokyo had a spectacular view of the eclipse

An "annular eclipse" has been viewed across a swathe of the Earth stretching across the Pacific from Asia to the western US.

The eclipse occurs when the Moon is at its farthest from the Earth and does not block out the Sun completely.

Millions of people witnessed the resulting "ring of fire" phenomenon.

The eclipse passed almost directly over Tokyo before sweeping just below Alaska's Aleutian islands and making landfall in the western US.

In Japan "eclipse tours" were held at schools and parks, on pleasure boats and even private airplanes. Similar events were also held in China and Taiwan.

TV in Tokyo broadcast the event live.

Light rain fell on Tokyo as the eclipse began, but the clouds thinned as it reached its peak, providing near perfect conditions.

Schoolchildren in Tokyo enjoyed the phenomenon

"it was a very mysterious sight – I've never seen anything like it," said Kaori Sasaki, who joined a crowd in central Tokyo.

Japanese electronics giant Panasonic sent an expedition to the top of Mount Fuji to film the eclipse using solar-powered equipment.

"Our goal is to broadcast the world's most beautiful annular eclipse from the highest mountain in Japan," the company said.

However, in Hong Kong skywatchers were not so lucky. Hundreds had gathered along the Kowloon waterfront where the Space Museum had set up solar-filtered telescopes, but heavy clouds obstructed the view.

In the US, viewing parties were reported in Reno, Nevada; Oakland, California, and elsewhere.

Hundreds also travelled to the Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque, new Mexico, which was hailed as one of the best vantage points.

"That's got to be the prettiest thing I've ever seen," said Brent Veltri of Salida, Colorado.

The eclipse was fully visible across a 240 to 300km-wide swathe but partial views could be seen across much of east Asia and North America.

The Slooh series of space telescopes has been covering the event on its website.

The eclipse began in Asia and traced a path across to the western US

Hamels suspended five games for throwing at Harper

Decrease font Decrease fontEnlarge font Enlarge font

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cole Hamels earned a five-game suspension for the way he welcomed Bryce Harper to the big leagues.

The 2008 World Series MVP was suspended for intentionally throwing at the Washington rookie in the Philadelphia Phillies‘ 9-3 win over the Nationals on Sunday night.

Major League Baseball announced the penalty Monday. Hamels also was fined.

Hamels wasn’t available to reporters before the Phillies opened a three-game series against the New York Mets. but he already admitted that he deliberately threw at Harper.

"I was trying to hit him," the two-time All-Star lefty said Sunday night. "I’m not going to deny it. I’m not trying to injure the guy. They’re probably not going to like me for it, but I’m not going to say I wasn’t trying to do it. I think they understood the message, and they threw it right back. That’s the way, and I respect it."

Hamels began serving his suspension Monday night. With Cliff Lee expected to come off the disabled list and start Wednesday, coupled with Thursday’s day off, Hamels really won’t miss a turn in the rotation.

Roy Halladay will likely pitch on regular rest Saturday and Hamels would then start Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. was disappointed the incident occurred.

"Obviously that’s not what we’re about," Amaro said. "We’re not about trying to injure people. things that happen in the game happen in the game. those are parts of the game. but as far as how the Phillies want to conduct themselves, we try to take the high road on things. By no means are we condoning this. We fully support what the commissioner’s office has decided to do."

Hamels plunked Harper in the small of the back with a fastball in the first inning. He said the purpose pitch was his old-school way of welcoming the 19-year-old Nationals phenom to the big leagues.

"That’s something I grew up watching, that’s kind of what happened. So I’m just trying to continue the old baseball because I think some people are kind of getting away from it," Hamels said. "I remember when I was a rookie the strike zone was really, really small and you didn’t say anything because that’s the way baseball is.

"but I think unfortunately the league’s protecting certain players and making it not that old-school, prestigious way of baseball," Hamels added.

Harper got the last word, though. when Hamels made a pickoff to first, Harper stole home for the first swipe of his eight-game big league career.

In the third inning, Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann hit Hamels in the left leg with one out and a runner on first when the Phillies pitcher squared to bunt. Home plate umpire Andy Fletcher warned both dugouts.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told the Washington Post that Hamels hitting Harper with a pitch was "classless" and "gutless."

According to the newspaper’s website, Rizzo also said: "Cole Hamels says he’s old school? He’s the polar opposite of old school. He’s fake tough. He thinks he’s going to intimidate us after hitting our 19-year-old rookie who’s eight games into the big leagues? He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with."

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he wished Hamels wouldn’t have been so forthcoming with his comments.

"He could have been a little more discreet or less honest," Manuel said. "the way I look at it, baseball is going to take care of it between the two teams on the field. to me, that’s the issue. when they hit Cole, it set it even. At the same time, the best way to handle the Nationals is to beat them on the field."

As for Rizzo’s reaction, Manuel brushed it off.

"I think that if we beat them on the field, that will take care of our business and that takes care of it," Manuel said. "when they hit Hamels, that takes care of it and we’re back on even ground. there was no warning or nothing. They had a chance to get even. that even made it a wash. what Rizzo says is no concerns to me."

How the iPhone 5 might only be 7.9mm thick

The next iteration of the iPhone is likely to be the slimmest one yet.

That probably doesn’t surprise anyone. after all, Apple is always on a mission to make the sleekest consumer electronics products on the planet. it is noteworthy to discuss exactly how the company may go about achieving that goal, though.

At the forefront of Apple discussions, opines KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, is "in-panel" technology that would allow the company to integrate both the touch sensor and the actual LCD panel in one component.

As the iPhone construction stands now, these two parts of the phone are separate pieces, meaning the touch sensor is an individual component that sits on top of the display itself.

If it could combine those into one piece of technology, it would be able to shave off a significant chunk of the device’s size. keep in mind we’re already talking about a very thin phone, so a "significant chunk" could just be a couple tenths of a millimeter.

In addition to making a sleeker phone, though, this would also help Apple with production. it could potentially cut back the lead time to make an iPhone from around two weeks to just 3 – 5 days.

The reason this has not been implemented in earlier iPhone designs is that the technology just wasn’t quite there yet and would have added on too much of an unnecessary cost. In the long run, though, it might now be at the point where doing so would actually save money for Apple.

Kuo also believes the Apple will continue to optimize its battery size, and change from a glass back panel to a metal panel in order to cut back on device size. these advancements, he says, will potentially lead to an iPhone 5 that is 0.44 millimeters smaller than the iPhone 4S.

iPhone Bills Boost Verizon Revenue Growth

NEW YORK (AP) — Holiday sales of the iPhone 4S started to boost revenue at Verizon Communications Inc. in the latest quarter, as subscribers settled in to paying their new monthly bills.

That meant that wireless service revenues grew at their fastest pace in three years at Verizon Wireless. The country’s largest cellphone company started selling the iPhone 4 a bit more than a year ago, but sales got a big boost when the 4S model was released in October.

IPhone sales don’t boost the results of a cellphone company immediately, because the companies subsidize them by hundreds of dollars to be able to sell the phone for $99 or $199. they then count on making the money back in service fees over a two-year contract.

At Verizon Wireless, the iPhone effect was clear in Thursday’s first-quarter report: the average monthly bill for subscribers on contract-based plans was $55.43, up 3.6 percent from a year ago. A few years ago, monthly fees were stagnant at Verizon.

However, the high price of the iPhone means phone companies are struggling to make it pay — most of the profit from the iPhone is flowing to Apple Inc., not the phone companies. Verizon Wireless recently introduced a $30 "upgrade fee" for existing customers trading up to a new phone.

[Read: Verizon to Auction Spectrum Worth Billions.]

Verizon Wireless gained 501,000 new subscribers under contract-based plans in the quarter, slightly above analyst expectations. It’s a closely watched figure because contract-based plans are the most lucrative. Verizon is expected to lead the industry this quarter, attracting twice as many new customers as chief rival AT&T Inc., which reports on Tuesday.

Verizon’s overall net income was $1.69 billion, or 59 cents per share, in the first three months of 2012, beating the average forecast of analysts by a penny per share. it was up from $1.44 billion, or 51 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 4.6 percent to $28.2 billion from $27 billion a year ago, matching expectations.

Verizon shares rose 58 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $38.24 in afternoon trading. that is near the upper end of their 52-week range of $32.28 to $40.48 per share.

New York-based Verizon Communications owns 55 percent of Verizon Wireless, and the corresponding share of the wireless earnings flow to Verizon’s bottom line. The rest goes to joint venture partner Vodafone Group PLC, a British phone company.

On the landline side, revenue continued to decline slowly as customers continue to cancel their phone and DSL lines. Verizon’s cable-like FiOS service continued to attract customers, and Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo said the company would stop selling DSL Internet service in areas where FiOS is available. DSL is slightly cheaper than FiOS Internet service, but much slower.

With the latest report, Verizon stopped reporting how many non-phone wireless devices connect to its network through wholesalers. Shammo said that’s because Verizon no longer has a good handle on how many devices like "smart" utility meters actually have active connections.

Florida I-75 south of Gainesville closed after massive pileup

Authorities are investigating the cause of a massive pileup early Sunday morning south of Gainesville, Florida, on Interstate 75 , where a long line of cars and trucks collided one after another on a dark highway so shrouded in haze and smoke that drivers were blinded.at least 10 people were killed and another 18 were taken to a nearby hospital, Shands at the University of Florida. as of Sunday night, six patients remained in the trauma center and three others admitted through the emergency room remained.

The interstate had been closed for a time before the accidents because of a mixture of fog and heavy smoke from a brush fire that may have been intentionally set. The decision to reopen it early Sunday will certainly be a focus of investigators, as will the question of how the fire may have started.

Authorities also must figure out when to reopen the southbound lanes of I-75, the north-south highway that runs virtually the entire length of Florida. Complicating matters is that some of the road’s asphalt melted. The northbound lanes were reopened late Sunday afternoon. (For information on Florida highway closures, click here.)

RELATED: Massive traffic jam in China

"our standard operating procedure is to get the road open as quickly as possible but let’s not forget we have 10 people who are not with us today," Lt. Patrick Riordan, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman, said Sunday evening. "so we are going to take our time assessing the situation."

The pileups happened around 3:45 a.m. Sunday on both sides of I-75. When rescuers first arrived, they could only listen for screams and moans because the poor visibility made it difficult to find victims in wreckage that was strewn for nearly a mile.

At least a dozen cars and six tractor-trailers were involved, and some burst into flames.

Hours later, twisted, burned-out vehicles were scattered across the pavement, with smoke still rising from the wreckage.

Cars appeared to have smashed into the big rigs and, in one case, a motor home. Some cars were crushed beneath the heavier trucks.. one tractor-trailer was burned down to its skeleton, charred pages of books and magazines in its cargo area. And the tires of every vehicle had burned away, leaving only steel belts.

Before Steven Camps hit the fog bank, a friend who was driving ahead of him in a separate vehicle called to warn of the road conditions. The friend said he had just seen an accident and urged Camps to be careful as he approached the Paynes Prairie area, just south of Gainesville.

A short time later, Camps said, traffic stopped along the northbound lanes.

"you couldn’t see anything. People were pulling off the road," he said.

Camps said he began talking about the road conditions to a man in the car stopped next to him when another vehicle hit that man’s car.

The man’s vehicle was crushed under a semi-truck stopped in front of them. Camps said his car was hit twice, but he and another friend were able to jump out. they took cover in the grass on the shoulder of the road.

All around them, cars and trucks were on fire, and they could hear explosions as the vehicles burned.

"it was happening on both sides of the road, so there was nowhere to go. it blew my mind," he said, explaining that the scene "looked like someone was picking up cars and throwing them."

Authorities had not released the names of victims Sunday evening, but said one passenger car had four fatalities. a "tour bus-like" vehicle also was involved in the pileup, police said.

All six lanes of the interstate were closed most of Sunday as investigators surveyed the site and firefighters put out the last of the flames. Some traffic was being diverted onto U.S. 301 and State Road 27, Riordan said. The northbound lanes were reopened at about 5:30 p.m.

At some point before the pileup, police briefly closed the highway because of fog and smoke. The road was reopened when visibility improved, police said. Riordan said he was not sure how much time passed between the reopening of the highway and the first crash.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Forest Service, Ludie Bond, said the fire began Saturday, and investigators were trying to determine whether the blaze had been intentionally set. she said there were no controlled burns in the area and no lightning.

Bond also said the fire had burned 62 acres and was contained but still burning Sunday. a similar fire nearby has been burning since mid-November because the dried vegetation is so thick and deep. No homes are threatened.

Four years ago, heavy fog and smoke were blamed for another serious crash.

In January 2008, four people were killed and 38 injured in a series of similar crashes on Interstate 4 between Orlando and Tampa, about 125 miles south of Sunday’s crash. More than 70 vehicles were involved in those crashes, including one pileup that involved 40 vehicles.

Associated Press writer Freida Frisaro in Miami contributed to this report.

Why Do Ladies Love Mitt Romney?

did you/would you vote for Mitt Romney? when it comes to presidential candidates, looks and humor matter to singles.

with the Iowa Caucuses behind us, the 2012 Republican primaries are well under way. Treading the waters of an election can be strenuous on a new relationship, especially when political views lay on polar opposite ends of the spectrum. But before you yell, "Can't we all just get along?!" know that there are plenty of political ideals that singles do agree on.

Zoosk, the social dating network, surveyed 4,000 singles in the United States on their views of the current candidates. of course, none of these things matter when it comes to determining who you want to run the country (unless you care more about looks than health care, or want to dine with the President rather than let him solve educational issues) but the results are interesting nonetheless. plus, since 87 percent of single men and women plan on voting this year, it's nice to know that they've taken at least some notice of the candidate pool, right?

Looks matter. Although Michele Bachmann has suspended her campaign due to lack of support after the Iowa Caucuses, she did poll high in one department: Hair. Yes, 35 percent of singles rate Bachmann's do as "the best." however, a win in the beauty department does not a President make, so we'd like you to keep that in mind, Michele. Rick Santorum, the sweater-vested candidate who could, is apparently lacking the beauty backup he needs to feel confident in upcoming primaries — only four percent of singles rate his hairstyle as "best."

Hairstyles aside, when it came to determining the sexiest candidate, none other than Barack Obama clinched the top spot with 41 percent of the vote. no Electoral College necessary. in fact, 38 percent of those surveyed would chose to double date with the Obamas rather than another candidate/spouse pair. hopefully Barry will be picking up the check, too. Morning Quickie: Barack Obama, Hot or not?

Laughs matter, too. Most singles polled (30 percent) believe President Obama has the best sense of humor out of all candidates, so hopefully he didn't mind that snide and tired joke about picking up the check on our non-existent double date.

Gender divide. Republican men and women seem to be split over who their current favorite potential GOP nominee is. when Zoosk asked, "If you were to vote today, who would receive your vote?" most of the Republican men (33 percent) chose Newt Gingrich, while 18 percent chose Mitt Romney. Women, however, favor Romney (is it his looks? I honestly don't see it), with 25 percent casting their vote for him. however, Gingrich earned 24 percent of the votes, which means the two are in an intense battle for the affections of Republican single ladies everywhere.

Wishful thinking. The biggest joke about Donald Trump's campaign was that he was actually considering it, but still, 30 percent of single Republicans wish he were running for President in 2012. Meanwhile, 30 percent of Democrats wish Hillary Clinton would give it another go. Try again in 2016, dreamers. Hillary Clinton: Marriage to bill is Totally Worth It

Jon Huntsman says President Barack Obama threw deficit reduction plan ‘in the garbage can’

former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman suggested President Barack Obama damaged trust in the executive branch by ignoring a 2010 bipartisan proposal to chop the deficit. Huntsman, a Republican candidate for president, made the claim at an NBC-Facebook debate in Concord, N.H., on Jan. 8, 2012. "When the American people look at the political process play out, they hear all the spinning and all the doctrinaire language, and they still walk away with the belief that they're not being represented in Congress, that there's no trust in the executive branch," he said. "and the Simpson-Bowles bipartisan proposal lands right on the desk of Barack Obama, and it lands in the garbage can." He was referring to a proposal that grew out of Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, established in February 2010, and chaired by former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming and former Democratic White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles.  In December 2010, the commission released its final report, which included dozens of proposals to cut discretionary spending, reform the tax code and Social Security and rein in health care costs, among other measures. we wondered — did Obama discard the policy proposals suggested by the the deficit commission? We've checked similar claims before, and think there's better evidence they landed in a desk file than a round file. Claim: Obama failed 'to stand up for the bipartisan debt solutions'

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said in a speech in September 2011 that Obama failed "to stand up for the bipartisan debt solutions of the Simpson-Bowles Commission."

our colleagues at PolitiFact New Jersey rated Christie's claim Mostly False. They found that the president did not fully embrace the commission’s recommendations at the outset but that Obama later outlined deficit reduction measures similar to those proposed by the commission.  even the commission’s co-chairs, Simpson and Bowles, said so. "we are encouraged that the president has embraced a balanced, comprehensive approach to deficit reduction similar to that outlined in the Fiscal Commission report," Bowles and Simpson said in an April 13, 2011, press release. Alice Rivlin, a member of the commission and former director of the Office of Management and Budget under Clinton, told PolitiFact New Jersey she was disappointed that the president didn't endorse the commission's recommendations immediately but agreed that Obama later embraced some of its proposals. a former policy adviser to Clinton said Obama has "approached the report very carefully." "He's kept it at arms' length," bill Galston, now a senior fellow at Brookings, told PolitiFact New Jersey. Obama is "not exactly rejecting it," Galston said, but "not exactly embracing it either." Claim: Obama 'took exactly none of his own deficit reduction commission’s ideas' In April 2011, John Boehner told ABC News that Obama, "took exactly none of his own deficit reduction commission’s ideas. not one." PolitFact rated Boehner's claim False. PolitiFact looked at the commission’s final report, which was released in December 2010; the president’s fiscal year 2012 budget proposal, which was released in February 2011; and a fact sheet released by the White House following Obama’s budget speech at George Washington University in April 2011. The commission’s report offered no shortage of recommendations for the White House to choose from — more than 70, in fact. Based on our analysis of these three documents, as well as our discussions with independent budget experts, we found many policies now advocated by Obama had been included in the bipartisan commission’s final report. however, in many cases the White House proposals either differed in some of the details or lacked details entirely.

Here's an abbreviated version of what we found. (For more explanation, visit the original fact-check.) First are two recommendations by the commission that were included in the president’s budget proposal: • allow the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation to increase premiums.  • Increase government authority and funding to reduce Medicare fraud. These two items by themselves show Boehner was wrong to say that none of the commission’s recommendations were included — and it was similarly inappropriate for Huntsman to declare the proposal went from Obama's desk in the garbage can. Next, we listed six of the commission’s recommendations that were included in the president’s budget with slight differences. • Eliminate "in-school subsidies" for the federal student loan program.  • end the reliance on deficit spending to fund the transportation trust fund.  • Freeze pay for federal workers and Defense Department civilians. • Overhaul the medical malpractice system.  • Reform the corporate tax system.  • Increase government efficiency. Finally, the White House "framework" on deficit reduction refers very generally to seven of the commission’s recommendations. In several of these examples, the White House proposal offers less detail than the commission’s. • Cut both security and non-security spending.  • Implement structural tax reform.  • Reform Medicare’s Sustainable Growth Rate mechanism.  • Establish a long-term global budget for federal health care spending. • Eliminate state "gaming" of Medicaid.  • Reduce agricultural subsidies.  • create a mechanism to enforce adherence to debt stabilization. we reached out to Huntsman's campaign for evidence for his claim but didn't hear back the day of the debate.

Our ruling Huntsman used a metaphor to describe what happened to the deficit reduction proposal. "The Simpson-Bowles bipartisan proposal lands right on the desk of Barack Obama, and it lands in the garbage can," he said. But our research shows that, while he didn't embrace the entire document, some of its ideas emerged in Obama's budget proposals released more than a month later. we rate Huntsman's claim false.
