Samsung Douches Up Australian Apple Store With Paid Galaxy Flashmob [Update]

Jibes at the iPhone and its users clearly aren’t enough to attract the attention of Apple’s customers, so Samsung is taking a more direct approach. Today the Korean company sent a screaming flashmob equipped with big “Wake Up” signs to protest outside of an Apple retail store in Sydney, Australia.

In what is undoubtedly Samsung’s most ridiculous move yet, it sent a coach load of people dressed in black to protest outside of an Apple retail store. The message, which was plastered on the side of the coach and on signs help by the mob, was clear: Wake Up!

The rather embarrassing campaign is thought to be part of Samsung’s Galaxy S III marketing, organized by an Australian creative agency called Tongue. Marketing blog Mumbrella traced the campaign back to Tongue shortly after the news spread:

4 Ideas to Use Postcards to Spread the News

If you have a company newsletter, then postcards are one way that you can send it out effectively and inexpensively. If you do not have a company newsletter, then postcards are a great way to get one started without spending a lot of money. In addition, postcards can help you to market your business more effectively. Here are four ways that you can do so easily using postcards.

Send out Frequent Updates

If business is constantly changing, or you have frequent sales that you want to advertise, then postcards are the way to go. Postcards are faster to create and easier to...

The ‘Wake up.’ campaign has also seen the words written on the bottom of Bondi Ice Bergs pool, as well as on a series of billboards placed around town. there was also a site takeover on news.com.au over the Anzac day holiday.

I must say, Samsung’s latest marketing stunt makes it’s “you’ve been Samsunged” campaign look genius.

UPDATE: Samsung has since denied any involvement in the Wake Up campaign, and it was in face BlackBerry maker Research in Motion that organized it. That’s right: a company that is quickly drowning at the hands of devices like the iPhone is urging Apple — the world’s richest company — to “Wake Up!”

RIM confessed to organizing the stunt on Tuesday, May 1:

“we can confirm that the Australian ‘Wake Up’ campaign, which involves a series of experiential activities taking place across Sydney and Melbourne, was created by RIM Australia. a reveal will take place on May 7th that will aim to provoke conversation on what ‘being in business’ means to Australians.”

HTC revenue plunges on intensifying competition

Smartphone maker HTC Corp (宏達電) yesterday reported that sales last month fell 19.87 percent from a year earlier and that accumulated sales in the first four months of the year dropped 30.84 percent from the year before amid fierce competition from Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics co, a company release said.

On a monthly basis, last month’s sales edged up 0.49 percent to NT$31.03 billion (US$1.06 billion) compared with NT$30.88 billion in March, helped in part by the launch of the company’s new one series smartphone products.

During the January-April period, revenue totaled NT$98.82 billion, down from NT$142.89 billion in the same period last year, the release showed.

HTC shares dropped 4.35 percent to close at NT$452 on the Taiwan Stock Exchange yesterday.

While HTC remained the second-highest priced share on the local bourse after Largan Precision co (大立光), yesterday’s decline was bigger than the 2.11 percent fall of the benchmark TAIEX, Taiwan Stock Exchange data showed. Largan, the nation’s leading maker of handset lenses, edged down 0.62 percent to NT$477 yesterday.

Taoyuan-based HTC is counting on the success of its one series models to help narrow its gap with market leaders such as Apple and Samsung, especially after the launch of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone on Friday last week in London and the widely anticipated introduction of Apple’s iPhone5, likely sometime in the second half of the year.

Samsung led the global smartphone market in the first quarter of the year, with shipments of 42.2 million units and a market share of 29.1 percent, according to the latest IDC quarterly report released on Tuesday last week.

Apple was the runner-up, with shipments of 35.1 million units and a market share of 24.2 percent, while HTC ranked fifth, with shipments of 6.9 million units and a market share of 4.8 percent, IDC said.

Samsung’s “aggressive marketing campaign, software/user interface additions that enhance the user experience and wider distribution should solidify its position in the high-end smartphone segment,” Morgan Stanley analyst Jasmine Lu (呂智穎) wrote in a report last week.

Lu said it would be difficult for HTC to compete with Samsung in terms of marketing, distribution and operator coverage, especially in such markets as Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

On April 24, HTC told an investors’ conference in Taipei that revenue would continue to decline in the second quarter from the first quarter, citing intensified competition with Apple and Samsung.

HTC said second-quarter revenue would reach about NT$105 billion, compared with NT$67.79 billion in the first quarter and NT$124.40 billion a year earlier.

Morgan Stanley said it expected HTC to meet its second-quarter guidance, with more than 10 million units being shipped in the quarter.

Sleuthing out the Apple store ‘Wake Up’ stunt Down Under

Apple's three-floor retail store in Sydney, Australia, takes up nearly 15,000 square feet and features a glass staircase that runs the length of the store. Apple opened this location in 2008.

(Credit:Apple)

The banter in Sydney shockingly still revolves around the Wake Up flash mob that emerged in front of an Apple store a week ago. was it Samsung? How about RIM? Hell, let’s throw HTC in as a suspect for good measure. or maybe it’s Nokia!

You’ve probably heard about the incident by now. A big black bus pulled up in front of the Apple store in Sydney. the bus signage screamed Wake Up. Then a bunch of people emerged from the bus to do the same thing. there were chants and everything.

This tale has captivated me on my first day in Sydney. I get off a plane at 6 a.m. local time–or whatever time zone I’m on–and I’m just sucked into the Wake Up scandal. Perhaps it’s jet lag. Perhaps I just need a few pints.

In any case, it’s a bit fuzzy what Apple shoppers were supposed to wake up about, but the buzz-o-meter in Sydney is still rolling.

First, it looked like Samsung was behind the stunt. After all, Samsung has mocked Apple folks before for standing in long lines, worshipping theiriPhone and failing to buy Galaxy phones.

The problem: Samsung denied any involvement.

Now there are reports that maybe Research In Motion was behind the Wake Up bus. This RIM detective work revolves around MacWorld Australia’s analysis of DoubleClick code that may tie the beleaguered smartphone maker to the Wake Up campaign.

By now, even the staid Financial Review has to chime in on Wake-Up-Gate. the Financial Review probably spent part of its day–much like we did at ZDNet Australia–trying to find concrete proof behind the Wake Up mystery. the best the Financial Review could come up with was a tale about how these stunts could backfire on brands.

In other words, your guess is as good as mine about this Wake Up fiasco that has gripped Australia’s technology community (I exaggerate a bit–actually a lot of bit).

So as a public service, here’s a rundown of the potential Wake Up suspects.

Samsung. despite all the denials that it had nothing to do with the Wake Up bus, it’s hard to believe them. Samsung has mocked Apple fans before. And yes, there’s another Galaxy device coming shortly. also note that Samsung Australia had nothing to do with the stunt. But there are many other units in Samsung. Samsung remains a likely suspect.

RIM. OK, the RIM thing is possible based on previous marketing disasters, but the smartphone maker is licking its wounds. Apple has crushed RIM and is even grabbing enterprise momentum. RIM simply has better things to do than park Wake Up busses in front of Apple stores. one better thing to do for RIM: find strategic alternatives. I just don’t buy the RIM concept.

Nokia. sure Nokia’s financials stink. But Nokia can still market. Nokia has put dancing Windows Phone tiles in front of you. Why wouldn’t Nokia go ninja with a Wake Up bus. the marketing idea is just so cool that it looks like something cooked up in Finland and Redmond. Hmm. maybe the Wake Up bus in Sydney was just a trial balloon before a global campaign. Nokia also has better things to do, but you never know.

ZTE, Huawei, whoever. any new smartphone entrant could be a suspect and potential Wake Up bus driver. the chances are slim that these Apple rivals would go through the trouble of a Wake Up stunt. these competitors are much more likely to save money on the bus and undercut you on smartphone pricing.

HTC. HTC is talking up its one family. maybe it wants Apple users to wake up and consider yet anotherAndroid device (as if there aren’t enough of them already). HTC is a bit of a stretch for the Wake Up stunt. however, rumor has it that Dr. Dre was driving and counting his money from HTC’s ill-fated bet on Beats headphones. OK, I made that Dr. Dre thing up, but you never know.

This story originally appeared at ZDNet’s between the Lines under the headline “Australia’s Apple store ‘Wake Up’ stunt: Let’s run through the suspects.”

Will T-Mobile get the iPhone 5?

T-Mobile USA customers often feel like they are caught between a rock and a hard place.

They love T-Mobile’s affordable pricing plans on its service that beats the competition, but the carrier lacks some of the most popular devices, like the AppleiPhone. and this leaves some T-Mobile customers torn between a desire for hot new devices, like the iPhone, and the prospect of spending more each month on service.

So what’s a T-Mobile customer to do? in this edition of ask Maggie, I help two different T-Mobile customers sort through their options.

T-Mobile customers cope with iPhone envy

Dear Maggie, I really enjoy your column and appreciate all the sage wisdom that you share with us. Currently, I have the old Samsung Vibrant. But I’m jealous of what other phones offer, like 4G speeds, an OS beyond Froyo, and all the other tech advances.

My dilemma is that in July my most recent contract expires with T-Mobile. I am very excited about the idea of getting a new phone. But I am getting such a good deal with T-Mobile I don’t feel like I can abandon my plan. I have been a customer of T-Mobile for almost a decade. I priced out other carrier plans and I’d be paying at least $20 to $30 a month more to switch providers.

But I feel like I am a little trapped on T-Mobile. I’ve been burned by not getting all the latest OS updates for myAndroid device. and I feel like I’m missing out on the 4G speeds offered by Verizon and now AT&T. and I am fed up with the general lack of devices. I really want aniPhone 5 when it comes out later this year, especially if it comes with a larger screen and 64GB of storage.

Plus, I’ve also had bad customer experiences with T-Mobile over the past year, which has left me more open to moving to another provider. But as I noted before, the deal I have with T-Mobile is almost too good to give up. and the extra I’d spend on another carrier really adds up over time.

Would you recommend that I hold out until later this year to see what happens with T-Mobile and Apple? Like I said, I really want the iPhone 5. and I’m annoyed that T-Mobile still doesn’t have it, while every other carrier does. If T-Mobile doesn’t get the new iPhone, should I bite the bullet on the plan price and just switch carriers? Or should I stick with T-Mobile and get a new Android smartphone?

Thanks for your help,Michael

Dear Michael, Thanks so much for your kind words. I am glad you find the advice helpful.

You are not the only T-Mobile USA customer who has been frustrated by the fact that your carrier is now the only major U.S. operator without the iPhone. in fact, T-Mobile executives admitted that people are leaving its network in droves because it doesn’t have the iPhone and its major competitors — AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint — do.

In the fourth quarter, T-Mobile lost 526,000 customers, which is a contrast to the third quarter, when it added 126,000 net customers.

I don’t know why T-Mobile has still not been able to get the iPhone. For more than a year, T-Mobile execs have said the company would love to have the iPhone. But execs say the decision is Apple’s. and unfortunately, Apple hasn’t been interested in offering it there. Apple has kept mum on its reasons for keeping the phone off T-Mobile.

I used to think Apple was holding out because T-Mobile was just too small of a player. For the iPhone to work on T-Mobile’s 3G HSPA and HSPA+ network, Apple would have to make a few tweaks to the phone. and since T-Mobile is small relative to AT&T and Verizon, I assumed it just didn’t matter much to Apple. But that theory has been blown out of the water by the fact that Apple is now making the iPhone available to at least three tiny regional wireless operators in the U.S.

NTelos Wireless, which offers service to 400,000 customers in parts of Virginia, West Virginia, and a few other states, announced earlier this month that it will start offering the iPhone 4S on April 20. and it will also be offering the iPhone for $50 less than any other carrier offering the iPhone. in October, C Spire — formally known as Cellular South — announced that it would start selling the iPhone to its customers. and Alaska Communications will also be selling the iPhone 4S later this month.

Is the iPhone 5 in T-Mobile’s future? It’s pretty clear at this point that T-Mobile won’t be getting the iPhone 4S. But what about the iPhone 5? That’s a tough question to answer. first of all, we don’t know for certain when the new iPhone will be launched. It could be this summer or it could be in the fall. and we don’t know what new features it will have. you mention in your question LTE, 64GB storage, and a bigger screen. these are all strong possibilities.

Support for 4G LTE is almost certain, given how many competing products now offer 4G LTE. What’s more, the new iPad offers LTE, so clearly it’s something that Apple has been working on. while LTE would be a fantastic addition to the product line for all Apple iPhone fans, it could be bad news for T-Mobile subscribers who want the iPhone.

Why? T-Mobile is planning to launch its own 4G LTE network. But it won’t be available until 2013. Meanwhile, all three of the major U.S. carriers now offering the iPhone either already have or will soon have 4G LTE deployed. Verizon Wireless is the furthest in its deployment with AT&T running second. Sprint has announced its network and will start offering LTE service in certain markets in the next couple of months.

Without LTE, it’s hard to imagine Apple making the new iPhone available to T-Mobile, according to my CNET Reviews colleague Kent German. he said he just can’t see Apple making a special version of the iPhone without LTE to satisfy T-Mobile. and I tend to agree. there is a chance that T-Mobile could still offer the device and not have the LTE portion turned on.

So to answer your first question, there is a slight chance that Apple may offer the new iPhone on T-Mobile, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

If T-Mobile doesn’t get the next iPhone, what should you do? this is a really tough question to answer since it sounds like you’re getting a great deal from T-Mobile right now. you need to ask yourself if it’s worth giving up the discount you get with T-Mobile for Apple and the iPhone. Personally. I think it’s hard to give up a $20 to $30 savings each month simply for the iPhone or any other device.

Historically, T-Mobile customers haven’t had to sacrifice too much when it came to getting cutting-edge devices, with the exception of the iPhone, of course. T-Mobile was the first carrier to offer a Google Android phone. But recently, things have changed for T-Mobile customers. and the carrier isn’t keeping pace as much with the newest Google Android devices or the latest software updates.

Part of the reason may be because T-Mobile has been catering to customers interested in getting the most bang for their buck. this may have hurt its chances of getting the most advanced devices.

Another reason why it may not be getting the most cutting-edge devices is because it doesn’t yet offer 4G LTE. As device makers like Samsung, HTC, and Motorola focus on bringing new LTE devices to the market for AT&T and Verizon, they’ve included most of the high-end specs in LTE devices. As a result, they may be overlooking the needs of T-Mobile’s customers.

That doesn’t mean that T-Mobile hasn’t gotten new devices. It has, but many of its new smartphones have not had the most advanced specifications. For example, T-Mobile was the first carrier in the U.S. to offer a Nokia Windows Phone. But instead of Nokia making the higher-end Lumia 800 available, it made the less expensive Lumia 710 available.

T-Mobile also got the lower-end version of HTC’s latest smartphone, the One S. while it’s still an impressive device with an advanced 8-megapixel camera with super fast shutter speed, it runs a dual-core CPU instead of a quad-core processor found in the higher end One X, which is available on other carriers.

Still, I expect T-Mobile to get the new Samsung Galaxy S III, when it’s rolled out this spring. Details of this hotly anticipated Google Android phone have not yet been released. But Samsung sent out an invitation for a may 3 event in London, where the device is likely to be unveiled.

While we don’t know for sure what the specs on this device will be or which carriers will get it, I can tell you that it’s expected to run the latest version of Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. Other rumored features include, a 4.8-inch full HD 1080p resolution screen, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera, and 4G LTE support.

As I mentioned, I don’t know for certain that T-Mobile will get the Samsung Galaxy S III, but it has gotten previous versions of the Galaxy S family, so I suspect that Samsung will not have a problem tweaking this one for T-Mobile. with that in mind, I’m not sure if the 4G LTE capability will be bundled into the T-Mobile version of this device, given that T-Mobile won’t have LTE until next year. There’s a chance that the carrier can offer it as an LTE-capable device or it may leave LTE out of it.

Should you switch carriers for the iPhone? in your e-mail question to me, you said you’ve been using a Google Android phone the past couple of years. If you are happy with the operating system, then I think the Galaxy S III may be the device for you. It will definitely be the top of the line when it comes to smartphones, so I don’t think you will feel like you’re missing anything with this device. and you will be able to keep your inexpensive T-Mobile plan. and since your contract will be up for renewal, you’re likely to get a great subsidized price on the device.

You could buy an unlocked version of the new iPhone when it’s released and use it on T-Mobile’s network. But it’s likely that the device won’t be optimized for the frequencies that T-Mobile uses for its 3G or 4G LTE network. and that may mean that the device won’t perform up to its potential. plus, it will cost you a lot more out of pocket to buy the new iPhone. I’m kind of cheap, so I’d much rather get a subsidized phone, even if it means I have to agree to a two-year contract on a carrier and be limited to the devices that carrier offers.

As for the poor customer service you’ve received from T-Mobile, sadly I can’t assure you that you will have a better experience at any of the other three major carriers. I’ve written numerous times in this column how disappointed I’ve been by sales representatives at AT&T and Verizon, who don’t seem to know the company’s own service plans or products well enough to advise a new customer. So there is a good chance that you won’t find much improvement with a bigger carrier when it comes to customer service.

The conclusion? WaitIn summary, it can’t hurt to wait a little longer to see what Apple will offer in either June or October. your contract with T-Mobile isn’t over until July, so you have some time. By that time, the Samsung Galaxy S III will have been announced, and it’s possible the new iPhone could be announced. If it’s not and you’re curious to see what Apple will come up with next, wait a bit longer. I doubt that Apple will wait past October to release a new product. and there’s a good chance it will release it before then.

If T-Mobile doesn’t get the iPhone, I wouldn’t panic and give up your sweet deal with T-Mobile. I think the Samsung Galaxy S III is going to be a terrific phone. and more than likely, it will be offered at T-Mobile. Even if it’s not, the HTC One S is a terrific option as well. yes, it’s not HTC’s most advanced smartphone, but it’s still loaded with plenty of terrific features that should make it a worthy competitor to a new iPhone. with these other options available, I don’t think you need to jump ship for the iPhone. But if the iPhone is more important to you than the bargain you’re getting with your T-Mobile service, then leave for another carrier. As I mentioned earlier, thousands of other T-Mobile customers have done the same.

I hope this advice was helpful. and good luck!

Android for T-Mobile

Hi Maggie,I am on T-Mobile, and I have had a BlackBerry for two years now. My first phone was actually a T-Mobile G1, the first Android phone. But for some reason when I upgraded I went with a BlackBerry. I guess because T-Mobile didn’t have the iPhone. It was fine at first since most of my friends also had BlackBerry smartphones. I really liked using the BlackBerry Messenger feature with my friends. But now they’re all on iPhones or Android phones. and I’m tired of the BlackBerry, so I am looking for a change too.

I am on a family plan with T-Mobile. AT&T is too expensive for me and Verizon and Sprint don’t have good coverage where I live. So I can’t leave T-Mobile. now I am wondering what I should do. Android phones have gotten better. My upgrade is in August. and I really need to get a new phone then. I’ve heard great things about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III. and I’d love to get my hands on that phone if I could. But will it come to T-Mobile? and will it be available in August?

What about the iPhone 5? Will T-Mobile finally get it? and if not, what other Android phone do you recommend for me that will be available in August? I also would like to try a Windows Phone, but I’m not so interested in the Nokia Lumia 710. is there any chance that the Lumia 900 will come to T-Mobile?

Dear Jatin V, your question is similar to the question I answered from Michael. On the iPhone topic, I’m not sure if T-Mobile will get the new iPhone. But if the iPhone 5 is sporting LTE, then it’s likely T-Mobile won’t get it this go-around.

In terms of Android devices, I expect the Samsung Galaxy S III to be available on T-Mobile’s network. But there are also other options that are already available.

Samsung hasn’t officially announced the Galaxy S III or said when and where it will be available yet. But it’s hosting an event on may 3 in London to announce the device, so I expect the company to announce more of the details then. There’s a very good chance the device will be available in August.

Even though Samsung hasn’t said officially which carriers will offer the Samsung Galaxy S III, I expect that T-Mobile will get it, since it has offered the other two generations of this product.

The Galaxy S III is going to be a hot device and I think you will be more than happy with it. It’s going to be preloaded with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and it’s likely to have loads of other great features.

I also think the HTC One S is a worthy Android device. The HTC One S also runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and it has integrated Beats audio technology. It also has a large 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen. It uses the latest version of HTC’s Sense user interface. The feature that impressed me the most on this device was the camera. It offers 8 megapixels with rapid shutter speed so you can take multiple pictures very fast.

As for the Nokia Windows Phones, I’m not sure when Nokia will introduce new models. The company just launched the Lumia 900 on AT&T. Nokia, Microsoft, and AT&T are spending a lot of money to market this device for AT&T over the next six to eight weeks. It’s supposed to be one of AT&T’s “hero” devices.

Once the marketing blitzkrieg is over, there’s a chance that Nokia will make the device available to other carriers. But the only problem with making the Lumia 900 available to T-Mobile is the fact that the Lumia 900 is an LTE device and T-Mobile’s LTE network hasn’t been deployed yet. T-Mobile doesn’t expect to launch LTE until next year.

The company may introduce the Lumia 800 on T-Mobile. that phone is very similar to the Lumia 900 minus the LTE. But I find it a little strange that T-Mobile hasn’t introduced this device already. It was announced for Europe last fall.

Still, Nokia has plans to announce other Lumia models. and perhaps there will be one or two that will be available for T-Mobile. But I don’t expect T-Mobile to get anything that is terribly forward-thinking given Nokia’s relationship with AT&T. So the short answer to your question about Nokia Windows Phones is that I am sure more are coming, but it may not be by August.

I hope this advice was helpful. and good luck!

New MacBook Pro 2012 or iPhone 5 release date in June?

April 25, 2012, 2:28 PM — iPhone 5 or a new MacBook Pro? Apple’s new 2012 devices are the center of the mill.

Apple’s next iPhone, or the so-called iPhone 5, could lead to a new revolution — a halo effect that will allow the company to sell more devices, from iPods to Macs largely due to “brand support.”

With the upcoming WWDC 2012, however, tech sites report contradicting predictions, some are saying that a new MacBook Pro is expected to hit the developer show, while others believe that Apple will try its best to compete with Samsung’s may event with its own smartphone event.

According to Computer World, one of the reasons why the iPhone 5 is not yet ready for primetime is due to “Long Term Evolution,” the faster and more reliable wireless internet access that offer faster downloads and uploads. Apple’s new iPad, launched last month, is offering LTE but supports two carriers in United States only, Verizon and AT&T. Sprint on the other hand, isn’t getting LTE until mid this year.

Sprint, apparently, is already offering the iPhone specifically the 3G-only iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4, but in case the iPhone 5 will support LTE and it will get a June release date, the third-largest wireless carrier might lag behind Verizon and AT&T due to limited coverage. To avoid this scenario, Apple might offer the new MacBook Pro first before selling its much-anticipated iPhone 5.

The new MacBook Pro, according to rumors, is set to ship with the latest Mac OS X Mountain Lion, a new design inspired by “MacBook Air” sans optical drive, and a new processor and display. No word yet from Apple on the rumored MacBook Pro but analysts believe that the Cupertino, California-based computer and mobile phone maker will try its best to compete with Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Intel’s ongoing ultrabook “revolution,” and a new MacBook Pro is a great candidate.

Analysts are also expecting a “record-breaking” first day or first week iPhone 5 sales record, because Apple’s rivals, specifically Samsung Mobile, is on the verge of announcing a new Android-based smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S3, and Apple can only compete with the new phone by offering a smartphone with Long-Term Evolution, a new design, and likely, a new name. Release date rumors, excluding the June versions, say that Apple might start retailing a new iPhone this October, similar to last year’s iPhone 4S launch.

The Apple iPhone 5 May Be Launched With A New iPhone Nano Device

Since the original iPhone was launched in 2007 the Apple device has dominated the premium smartphone market. The handsets have been a global success thanks to the innovative new features that each new version of the phone delivers. This year we are preparing for the launch of the new iPhone 5 and it also looks likely that Apple will also release a second device with this phone that targets consumers looking for a more basic device.

Rumours have been circulating about an iPhone Nano for some time now. Although the Apple iPhone has achieved phenomenal success in the premium end of the market a number of other manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC produce a number of models, many of which are targeted towards the more budget end of the market. It looks like 2012 may be the year when Apple choose to spread their wings and launch an assault on the entire phone market rather than just the premium end. Even when new iPhone models are released the older versions of the handset still command huge fees. at present the iPhone 3GS which is two years old still retails at 300 without a contract which is a price much higher than many brand new Android budget phones. There is certainly a gap in the market for a wallet friendly iPhone and by launching the device alongside the new iPhone 5 Apple will be sure to keep their premium fans happy along with a host of new consumers.

We are expecting to see the new iPhone 5 released in June so consumers may not have long to wait until they can get their hands on this model and the new budget version of the iPhone. at this moment in time the specification of this more basic iPhone does remain a mystery. with the iPhone 5 we can be fairly certain of some of the specification as we can take a look at how older models have progressed. This will be a brand new product so one could only hazard a guess at what specification Apple will include on the model. The Nano handset will definitely be a smaller version of the iPhone 5. over the past two years the company have excelled at producing the best 3.5 inch displays so it is very likely that the new model may feature one of these. The new iPhone 5 is also set to feature a quad core processor so expect a version of the A4 chipset used on the iPhone 4 to also be included on the new budget iPhone.

Premium phone fans everywhere are eager to see exactly what the iPhone 5 will offer and it looks as though Apple will introduce a second model perfect for users looking for the famous Apple functionality but minus the very high price that the new iPhone 5 will command.

Eco-friendly LG Optimus Elite heads to Sprint for $29.99

Despite the fact that both Samsung and HTC produce a wide range of Android devices, from affordable ones to the more expensive lines, the mere mention of the two names immediately conjures up images of top of the crop smartphones. LG, on the other hand, is not quite up there yet as a brand. It’s not surprising to see the Korean manufacturer trying to make the most of its entry level smartphone offerings. the LG Optimus Elite, which hits Sprint and Virgin Mobile, is the company’s latest attempt to dominate the lower end of the Android sphere.

The LG Optimus Elite sports a respectable 3.5-inch screen and 320 x 480 resolution. under the hood, you’ll find an 800MHz processor, 2GB internal storage, 512MB of RAM, and 5MP rear camera. while you won’t see any Ice Cream Sandwich, since it’ll only ship with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the Optimus Elite does come with NFC and Google Wallet.

Tree huggers should be pleased to learn that the LG Optimus Elite comes with Carbon-free and ULE Platinum certification due to the eco-friendly features of the phone. Even the box is fully recyclable.

Coming in white and titan silver, the LG Optimus Elite can be had for just $29.99 on a 2-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate. It’s up for sale on Sprint’s online store on April 22, but you won’t be able to find it in brick-and-mortar stores until may 18. Virgin Mobile USA customers will have to wait for further announcements.

If you don’t mind digging deeper into your pocket, for $60 more you’ll get the mid-range LG Viper smartphone, which comes with 4G LTE speed, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4-inch display with 480 x 800 resolution, NFC and Google Wallet. It’s as eco-friendly as the LG Optimus Elite and will also be available on April 22.

Samsung Galaxy S3 to be minor update with eye tracking (exclusive)

The Samsung Galaxy S3 will be a relatively minor update from the S2, a source in the UK telecoms industry has told me, with a speed boost and eye-tracking among the upgrades. And it probably won’t be called the Galaxy S3.

Rather than go for a complete overhaul, Samsung has apparently opted for an incremental update to the S3. “It’ll be like the iPhone 4S was to the 4,” says my source, who wished to remain anonymous. he gave no firm word on specs, but said we should look to the HTC One X for what to expect. That has a 1.5GHz quad-core chip with 1GB of RAM and a 4.7-inch screen.

With an invite to a 3 may launch plopping into the CNET UK inbox, Samsung’s next superphone is just around the corner. But what do we expect it to look like? Word on the street last week was that the physical home button on the front would remain intact, suggesting the design won’t differ a whole lot from the existing S2 or the Galaxy Note.

Given that Samsung told us the Note is the spiritual successor to the S2, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise to hear the design hasn’t been overhauled, but I can’t deny I’m disappointed. Specs-wise, that’s roughly what we we’ve been expecting, although previous leaks had suggested the new model would be packing a stonking 1.8GHz chip, as well as a hearty 2GB of RAM, putting it easily at the top of the pile in terms of power.

Interestingly, Samsung may throw a curveball with the name. “Don’t expect it to be called the S3,” said my source, with a sly smile. Jason predicted yesterday that Samsung might “do an Apple” with the name, but I’m not sure it’s the best move — given that there are already so many Galaxy phones around, and the S2 is so popular, I reckon it would be wiser to stick with a straightforward name that shows people it’s the successor to the S2.

Samsung has apparently codenamed the phone ‘Bali’ internally, but it’s highly unlikely it’ll launch with that name — it doesn’t match with any of its previous naming conventions and naming phones after places is more of Orange’s thing.

One extra feature my source discussed was the use of eye-tracking, which Samsung is apparently calling ‘Human Interaction‘. the phone’s front-facing camera is able to detect when you’re looking at the screen — when you’re writing a text for example — and is able to lock when you look away.

This could be a handy feature, but it sounds like a hassle to me. if it requires you to put your passcode in every time you glance away from the screen, it’ll quickly become infuriating. It’ll be interesting to see how it’s implemented, but for the time being it sounds like more of a novelty feature, like Ice Cream Sandwich’s face unlock, rather than a truly useful addition.

The rumour mill has been churning furiously over the past few months, with claims of flexible displays and mad design aesthetics flying all over the place, so I can’t help but be disappointed by the news that the S3 will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

With quad-core specs similar to the One X, the Galaxy S3 — or whatever it’s eventually called — will be a step ahead of the iPhone 4S power-wise, but it leaves the door open for the iPhone 5 (which we might see in October) to push clear of the chasing pack. it would have been an exciting move for Samsung to really push the boat out with this guy.

The launch is only a few weeks away now, so we don’t have long to wait to see exactly what we’ll be getting. In the meantime, check out our complete guide, watch our video below, and head over to our Facebook page to tell us exactly what you want to see on the latest blower — and give me some ideas on what you think it should be called.
